For almost 40 years, Bruce Campbell has played has played Ash Williams in Evil Dead roles, albeit on again off again. Now, following the cancellation of Starz Ash vs Evil Dead, the actor stated that he is retiring as Ash for good.
The actor took to social media to break the news throughout the week. Below is a copy of the Facebook post he wrote regarding the decision.
Good people, Evil Dead fans everywhere, I bid you a heartfelt farewell playing Ash – the character I took acting lessons with for 39 years.
I am hereby retiring from that portrayal. It’s time. I followed Ash from his formative years thru his mid-life crisis and decline. What a thrill! What a privilege!
We had a great resurgence with the help of Starz (kudos not jeers, folks). They made it possible for 15 more hours of Evil Dead-ness in your life – the equivalent of 10 more features!
Is Ash dead? Never. Ash is as much a concept as a person. Where there is evil in this world, there must be one to counter – man or woman, it matters not.
Thanks for watching.
Love,
Bruce
A horror comedy that continued the tale of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead movies, Ash vs Evil Dead premiered back in 2015, much to the delight of fans of the cult classic series. While fans certainly seemed to enjoy, the show only last three seasons before being canceled earlier this week.
Based on the most recent episode, it seemed that the cast and crew were aware of the coming cancellation, as storylines are close to resolving.
Titled “The Mettle of Man,” the conclusion will see Ash go toe to toe with a sixty-foot Kandarian demon, riding in a tank across the post-apocalyptic Elk Grove. The Ash vs Evil Dead series finale airs April 29, 2018, on Starz.
Hail to the king, baby.
