Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen has certainly had its fair share of naysayers since the reboot was announced, as fans preferred Del Toro and Perlman’s rendition. So far though, news surrounding the faces behind the film only spell good news, with the latest addition adding even more talent.
Game of Thrones and Deadpool (Ajax/Francis) alumni Ed Skrein will play the role of Major Ben Daimio. In the comics, Daimio is a member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense who. When the military man has a chance supernatural encounter, he gains the ability to turn into a jaguar when angered or in pain.
Skrein will join a star-studded cast led by David Harbour, who will do his best to replace Ron Perlman as the cigar smoking demonic hero known as Hellboy. Ian McShane and Milla Jovovich have also been confirmed for the film as well. While McShane will play the role of Hellboy’s adoptive father, Professor Broom, Jovovich will play the titular role as villainess, medieval sorceress out to destroy humankind.
Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen looks to be starting filming this September, on location in the U.K. and Bulgaria. Mike Mangala’s latest comic book adaptation will be headed by Neil Marshall, best known for his work with HBO’s Game of Thrones (The Watchers on the Wall, Blackwater) and West World (The Stray).
Alongside that, Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin will produce the film, as will Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson.
Time will tell as to whether the reboot will reinvigorate the franchise, following the disappointing reviews for Hellboy II: Golden Army, or whether Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman deserved a shot at a third film after all.
