MAJOR SPOILERS FOR PAST SEASONS OF GAME OF THRONES
“They have no idea what’s going to happen.”
The teaser trailer for season six of Game of Thrones contains no new footage but definitely gets the goosebumps raised as fans anticipate the new season. While the footage is lacking, we do hear a bit of voiceover from actor Max von Sydow, who plays Bran’s mentor, the Three-Eyed Raven. We also get some serious questions, as we head into completely uncharted territory; season six is the first time the show will not draw from previously written literature.
“We watch, we listen, and we remember. The past is already written. The ink is dry,” the Three-Eyed Raven says. Immediately afterwards, footage of several brutal and shocking scenes of past Game of Thrones seasons show in rapid succession. Is this quote absolute truth? Or is the Three-Eyed Raven warning Bran not to interfere? Surely, if he could, Bran would have a lot of things he would like to change. Is it possible for him to bend the rules and prevent the deaths of his family? Can he prevent his own fate, thus, changing the events of the very first episode of the show? Or is he doomed just to watch helplessly as these scenes play out?
The trailer ends with blood pouring from Jon Snow’s lifeless (?) body, followed by a quick shot of Bran warning. “They have no idea what’s going to happen,” Bran says. He is obviously talking about the characters in the Game of Thrones universe, but, in the trailer, this line serves another purpose: book readers do not know what is going to happen either. For the first time, every viewer of Game of Thrones is on an even playing field.
Fans of the HBO series are still talking about the fate of Jon Snow, and what will become of him. As it stands, the teaser trailer gives zero hints about where the various storylines might be headed. All we know is that this “game” is an entirely new one. Look for the next season of Game of Thrones in April.
