LeBron James is a basketball superstar. He is in every conversation regarding the NBA, and he’s currently battling it out for another championship vs the Golden State Warriors in the NBA finals. Now LeBron is setting the gaming world abuzz with the release of NBA 2k19 later this year.
It’s the 20th anniversary of the NBA 2K series. It’s pretty crazy to think they have been making ANY game for 20 years, let alone a dedicated basketball series.
LeBron is gracing the cover of the upcoming NBA game. The cover shows a close up of LeBron on a black background. He is surrounded by a plethora of gold words that sing his praise. If you’re paying attention you might notice a subtle detail that shores up an issue that the 2K series(and many other sports games) have had. The super close up angle is dramatic of course, but it also doesn’t show any detail on what jersey LeBron is wearing. Past games have had superstars on their cover, only to have that cover become obsolete as players engage in their own personal game of musical chairs. James is rumored to be switching teams(again) come the end of this season, so it’s a smart move to give him some cover in the jersey department.
This isn’t the first time that James has been on a 2K cover. In 2014, the superstar was front and center- albeit wearing a Miami Heat jersey.
This 20th-anniversary edition will have James being more than the poster boy. There will be several LeBron-themed extras included. Most will be digital like a LeBron James MyTeam card, LeBron James MyCourt customizations, and 25 pairs of LeBron James-themed Nike shoes. Snagging a copy of NBA 2K19 20th Anniversary Edition, will also let players be the lucky owners of some physical merch, including a LeBron James poster, sticker sheet, and wristband.
Superfans will no doubt be very pleased with this offering. Whether James leads the Cavs to the championship in the next week or not, he will be immortalized in a game as one of the greats.
Decades of video games and comic books have molded me into the nerd with a heart of gold that I am today. I can go full fanboy one second, and then gleefully play devil’s advocate the next- life is just more fun that way.
