After ten years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe ruling the box office and captivating audiences around the globe, one might think that the franchise would run out of steam by now. On the contrary, Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, has MCU plans for years to come. Originally intended to last until the year 2020, it looks like we may be watching MCU movies all the way up until 2024!
In an interview with Birth. Movies. Death, Feige had this to say:
Obviously people are aware of Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Guardians 3, which James [Gunn] gets into prep on very soon. Outside of that, we like the idea of having the world do what we’re doing, which is focusing on the immediate future… but there are secret vaulted doors in Marvel Studios that lead to essentially what we’ll be doing between now and 2024.
Feige is obviously leaving a lot to the imagination, and fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are sure to open the floodgates when it comes to speculation. While nothing is set in stone, we can surely expect some new heroes with their own franchises, tentative Fox acquisitions like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, and sequels to the already established solo arcs.
*Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp ahead*
The ending of the upcoming Avengers 4 film will also definitely have an impact on the direction of the MCU’s future. Following the events that take place in Ant-Man and the Wasp, we now know that Thanos’ deadly snap in Avengers: Infinity War may be able to be “fixed” (though some things may still not be the same after). If Avengers 4 ends in some universe-altering event, the possibilities for MCU narratives leading up to 2024 will only grow that much larger.
Both Ant-Man and the Wasp and Avengers: Infinity War are still playing in theaters. The Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue on March 8th, 2019 with the release of Captain Marvel, followed by Avengers 4 on May 3rd, Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 5th, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2020.
