Mortal Kombat X is coming in almost two weeks and the fans are getting more excited than before for tasting blood on their new enemies. And this is a very good reason to celebrate this bloodthirst addiction created in 1992, by counting a list of the six most brutal fatalities ever created in the history of Mortal Kombat. Why six?, let’s say the author of this article likes pair numbers. So, let us begin:
6. Sheeva’s skin peeling (MK3/UMK3)
Introduced in Mortal Kombat 3 (1995) as a playable character, by surprise of the fans, the female Shokan Sheeva proved to be a hell of a character, as powerful and brutal as Goro or Kintaro. Because of this, one of her fatalities was removing her opponent’s skin just with her bare hands. Simple and brutal as it sounds.
5. The Pit II (MK2)
The premise during the making of Mortal Kombat 2 (1993) was to be “bigger, badder and better” than Mortal Kombat 1 (1992). So, how the creators would be able to surpass the impact generated by throwing your opponent to a floor full of bloody spikes on the first pit?. Easy, just changing the camera position. There were no spikes on this pit, just a plain floor, but when the developers changed the camera position and force the player to see from above how the character falls, desperately screams and finally crashes into the floor, they showed to the player a more powerful feeling before a death: they showed us fear, the natural fear of falling.
4. Noob Saibot’s body split (MK9)
Mortal Kombat 9 (2011) not just reinvented an almost dead franchise, but also was able to give so much details about the most important aspect of a Mortal Kombat game: the blood and gore, but with this fatality the guys at NetherRealm overreacted. Analyze it: a guy and his shadow, halving someone else from his/her feet, using only the brutal force they have… too gross and fun to be real.
3. Kung Lao’s hat slice (MK2)
Another fatality too gross and fun to be real was Kung Lao’s first fatality on his debut in Mortal Kombat 2. Again, the “bigger, badder and better” premise works perfectly in a simple three act move: slice a guy in half, watch him fall, enjoy.
2. Sub Zero’s head ripping (MK1)
One of the reasons the first Mortal Kombat was a bit hit was due its excessive and graphic violence. Sub Zero’s fatality was one of the most impressive moves in that game and with time, it became one of the most iconic fatalities ever, been replicated in most of the MK games so far. This is “classic brutality at its finest”.
1. Quan Chi’s leg remove and hit (MK4/MK9)
People may wonder why this fatality is at the top of the list, but this move has everything a fatality has to have: it’s simple, extremely brutal and unexpected in some way. When people got used to ultra complex movements for your character killing your opponent, this strange so goth type of character came in Mortal Kombat 4 (1997) and do something very simple yet brutal and unexpected: ripp the opponent’s leg and starts hitting him/her with it endlessly.
It’s not just that, because this fatality is so powerful, Quan Chi has this same move in Mortal Kombat 9. And let’s being honest, you can watch a 10 hour video of this and not get bored.
Is there any fatality you think it should be on this list?. Please make a comment below and let us hear your voice in such an important matter as this.
