In January, I wrote an article about the status of the upcoming X-Men series that was granted a pilot order back in July of 2016. After some months of development, that show, The Gifted, has been given its first official trailer. As I mentioned in the previous article, Bryan Singer will direct the pilot with Max Nix writing it. Check out the trailer below.

The story will follow the Strucker family as they come to terms with the young adults, Lauren and Andy, possessing Mutant abilities. According to a brief snippet of audio in the trailer, Reed Strucker, the kids’ father, is a government agent working to capture mutants. So that’ll be an interesting twist to the story, as Reed must choose between his kids or his job. Another little piece of audio, Reed stating that “there is nothing more important to me than my family”, suggests that Mr. Strucker has already made his choice. This choice will most likely leave the family on the run from the same government agency that Reed originally thought he could trust.

The trailer also gives us some information about Lauren and Andy’s powers. Lauren seems to possess some variety of telekineses; while Andy appears to have powers in a league of his own. In the beginning of the trailer, viewers see that Andy is the victim of bullying. This treatment leaves him open to the anger that comes associated with it. I have a feeling that a good majority of the show will center around Andy, and the struggle for him to control his anger, thus controlling his power. Much like David Haller in Legion, bad things will happen if Andy doesn’t get his powers under control.

the gifted-fox-tv series

The Strucker family will join forces with an underground band of Mutants. Who are these mysterious Mutants exactly? Well, that remains to be seen as of now. But there will be other Mutants we are more familiar with popping up throughout the show. Blink and Polaris will make appearances to help fend off those Sentinal looking spiders. The Gifted has a full series order, so we can expect to see a full season (although the number of episodes is unknown at this time) to air on FOX this fall.

After Deadpool made an absolute killing at the box office (we were pretty big fans of it as well; check out our review), it seemed inevitable that the “merc with a mouth” would see a surge in popularity. Obviously, a sequel is in development, but a more surprising announcement is that an animated series starring Deadpool is coming next year to FXX (the sister network to FX).

IGN reports that the series is coming in 2018, it will start with a ten episode first season, and it will be an “adult action-comedy.” In even better news, the showrunners and head writers are Atlanta‘s Donald and Stephen Glover. This will be the second Marvel property to get a show through the FX networks, after Legion debuted in February of 2017.

The combination of Archer and Deadpool should make for a nice double tap of “adult action-comedy” on FX.

Donald Glover is no stranger to the realm of superhero media: he has a role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, he voiced Miles Morales on the animated Ultimate Spider-Man, and he is also playing young Lando Calrissian in the 2018 Han Solo prequel film. In addition, Glover’s Atlanta will begin its second season in 2018, which also airs on FX.

Although no casting information has been released yet, it seems likely that Donald Glover will have a role in the upcoming Deadpool animated series. In addition to the Glovers, the show will be produced by Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory. Stay tuned for further details on the animated series as they become available; Deadpool 2 is scheduled to release to theaters nationwide in 2018.

Which is more exciting: Deadpool 2 coming in 2018, or an adult-oriented Deadpool animated series coming that same year? Provided Ryan Reynolds is out, who do you want to hear voicing the merc with a mouth? Let us know in the comments below.

Superhero movies have become a popular genre in part due to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The popular franchise features films developed around popular Marvel Comic Characters. The first film to be part of MCU was Iron Man, released almost a decade ago. The franchise has spawned three phases. The second phase began in 2013 with the release of Ironman 3. The third and current phase commenced in 2016 when Captain America: Civil War hit theaters.

As with many popular movies, things just don’t end with the release of the film but often spread into other media and merchandising. This is true for the Marvel Cinematic Universe which has evolved and today encompasses so much more.  These movies have also inspired numerous television series on the network or online streaming services like Netflix. Attractions have been added at amusement parks such as Disneyland and Discovery Times Square, featuring characters from MCU. Other inspirations have led to television specials, video games and even an endorsement for the Coca-Cola Company.

Given its wild success, many wonder what exactly caused the phenomenal growth. The excitement of these films has led to superstar casts who have reprised their roles in successive film releases. For instance, Robert Downey, Jr. has appeared as Iron Man not only in his namesake trilogy but also several Avengers installments, The Incredible Hulk, and Captain America. He is also slated to appear in the latest Spiderman movie and a future Avengers sequel.

As MCU continues through its third phase, more films such as Spiderman: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok due to be released this year with others in development. The effect MCU has had on other aspects of the entertainment industry is likely to continue as well with the gaming industry, including casinos, set to see the release of new games. The future looks bright for the Marvel Cinematic Universe which should come as good news to fans around the globe.

Kevin Feige has been anything but tight-lipped in regards to the company’s plans. Just days after possibly revealing a key identity in the cinematic universe, The President of Marvel Studios stated that the Marvel cinematic and television products will collide at some point.

In an interview with i09, Feige spoke about the possibility of the of the two crossing over.

“The future’s a long time. So, the truth is, I don’t really know, but there are a lot of TV shows being made, and hopefully we’ll continue to make a lot of movies. At some point, there’s going to be a crossover. Crossover, repetition, or something.”

Currently, there has been little to no interaction between the products, aside from the vague mention of the Big Green Guy or the Guy with the Hammer on the TV shows. The movies have given no attention to the existence of occurrences that take place in shows like Daredevil, as they seem to appear on a much small scale, despite both affecting New York.

Even the television show that was a direct spinoff – or at least result of – the Avengers movie, Agents of Shield, has its own narratives that don’t entirely rely on events of the movies and vise versa.

Marvel

The Defenders have been rumored to be in Infinity War since it was announced, but in what capacity

Our first exposure to small appearance will likely be during Avengers: Infinity War, and will probably be limited to The Defenders in New York for a scene or two.

But given the ridiculous amount of movies and shows that Marvel has planned, even so, to organize them into phases, it only makes sense that they will cross over at some point. Otherwise, they will either get stale or run through all of the big ideas presented in the comics and will have to make up their own.

Dave Bautista’s role as the muscle-bound, serious warrior Drax – out to avenge his family’s death at the hands of Thanos – was a pleasant surprise in the original Guardians of the Galaxy, as the actors, prominent screen time beforehand was limited to quite henchman roles (Riddick, Spector).

But it may come as a surprise to fans that the star originally disliked his role as Drax the Destroyer. In a recent interview with CBX, Bautista discussed how, despite being excited about the script, he wasn’t crazy about his part.

“It went a different direction than what I thought they were going to go with Drax. That’s just because I was expecting one thing and got another. So I was a little bit thrown off at first. Also, what I usually do when I get a script is I read my dialogue first, I just didn’t really get the jokes. I just didn’t think Drax was that significant in the film, and I don’t find myself funny at all. So I remember reading, and I’m just sitting there not laughing. Like, wow, it was disappointing because I thought Drax was going to be so much more.”

He goes on to describe that it wasn’t until the actual table read, hearing the lines out loud, and how Drax meshed with the other characters, that the character started to resonate with him. A large part of it could be found in others reactions, as while he didn’t find the lines funny when he read it to himself, everyone else reacted otherwise.

I for one am glad he took the role, as he seems to be the perfect fit (and I’ve been a fan of his since his WWE days in evolution). Bautista is set to reprise his role as Drax “The Destroyer” in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when it hits theaters later this week, May 5, 2017.

The first official trailer for the Netflix series, Marvel’s The Defenders, has arrived. And it looks like the team, now fully assembled, will be a force to be reckoned with.

All of the cast members from the heroes’ stand alone series will be returning. Charlie Cox will reprise his role as the blind vigilante, Daredevil; Krysten Ritter as the super strong Jessica Jones; Mike Colter as the impenetrable Luke Cage; and Finn Jones and the guy with the glowing fist, the Iron Fist. In the trailer, one can see a lot of things happening, the most important being how The Defenders overcome their differences in order to work as a team. It appears Danny Rand and Luke Cage will have a small altercation at first. Check out the trailer below.

With the team (finally) coming together, we also see a new enemy arise in New York City. Sigourney Weaver will play Alexandra, a mysterious foe we don’t have much factual information on from the trailer as of yet. We see The Defenders being tossed through the air like a pile of leaves in the wind in one scene, with Alexandra saying to The Defenders in a scene after, “The more connections you have, the easier it will be to break you.” This begs the question: Does Alexandra possess powers similar to Madame Gao’s (In season 1 of Iron Fist Madame Gao throws Danny much like you see The Defenders getting thrown in this trailer)?

The trailer also reveals that we will see the return of Elektra, Colleen Wing, Stick, Misty Knight, and, of course, Claire Temple. With a new, more formidable, enemy, this group of heroes is gonna need all the help they can get (although Elektra may not be so friendly in this series). After the first teaser trailer with The Defenders riding in an elevator, this one reveals a lot more about what the team-up will look like. Look for more news regarding The Defenders as we get closer to its release date on August 18.

While watching Marvel’s Agents of Shield, one could get the idea that the Inhumans play a big role in the universe. Not just because they have the habit of being hunted down like Mutants are in the X-Men franchise, but because they have this unique backstory behind them that makes watching them more exciting and mysterious. Viewers don’t get to see the most famous Inhumans while watching Marvel’s Agents of Shield (like Black Bolt, Medusa, or Maximus), but they do get an introduction to their species so that viewers who haven’t read any of the Inhumans’ comics get an idea of where they come from, how they came to be, whether the majority of Inhumans are good or evil, etc.

Just recently, we were given the first Marvel’s The Inhumans TV series poster via Twitter–with the caption, “Beyond Humanity”–to drool over while we wait for the show to air on ABC. After being removed from the movie schedule last year, it’s good news that the Inhumans has a story worth continuing. Check it out below.

inhumans-marvel-poster

The poster shows the symbol for the Inhumans’ leader, and the main character, Black Bolt. He will be played by Anson Mount, an actor known for his role as Cullen Bohannon in Hell on Wheels. Game of Thrones star, Iwan Rheon–known for his role as Ramsey Bolton–will play Maximus, the sly and, sometimes deceptive, brother of Black Bolt. In the comics, Maximus plays the role of protector of the Attilan people, regardless of the suffering it may bring to Humankind. Serinda Swan will play Medusa, the lover of Black Bolt and hair wizard (you’ll understand what I’m talking about when you see her in action). Ken Lueng, known for his roles in Lost and The Sopranos, will play Karnak; Eme Ikwuakor will play Gorgon; Mike Moh will play Triton. Don’t worry Inhumans fans, Lockjaw, the royal escort to the Inhuman Royal Family, and teleporting canine, will be making an appearance too.

Marvel will debut the first two episodes in IMAX theaters, starting September 1, for two weeks before the actual premiere of the show on September 26 on ABC. Each new episode will air on Tuesday nights. There will be only eight episodes in this season, which is fine with me, as there won’t be any time for plot fillers or unnecessary additions to the story.

Last week I went to the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I thoroughly enjoyed the original film and in fact, see it as one of the better Marvel adaptations. However my expectations were low. I doubted volume 2 could surpass the original. Would it rely on variations of the same jokes, would the movie confuse itself with the litany of characters that seemed to be included? I thought it would be ok, but suffer the fate of most sequels. I was so, utterly wrong. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stands alongside the likes of Terminator 2 and Aliens. A sequel that takes what worked from the original, and refines it into the best outcome thinkable. I’d go as far as saying, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the best marvel film so far. Standing just ahead of Deadpool, Logan and Captain America: Civil War.

Guardians 2 takes the tone of the original and turns it up to 10. Guardians of the Galaxy was a great action movie with a few well thought out jokes, here and there. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on the other hand, is a hilarious comedy with phenomenal action sequences. Sure many of the jokes were in the same vein as the previous film, with a heavy reliance on Drax’s blunt remarks and the adorable antics of baby Groot. However I found myself laughing for the majority of the film. Another big worry of mine was the seemingly over packed cast this time around. However unlike Suicide Squad and Batman Vs Superman, Vol. 2 gives each character an appropriate amount of screen time and development. I ended up caring just as fiercely about newcomers Nebula and Yondu as I did the original cast. And I haven’t even mentioned how Guardian’s opening sequence is possibly one of the greatest in all of filmmaking (you’ve got to see it for yourself.) It’s clear to see I was smitten. However I wondered what everyone else had thought about this riveting comedy. So let’s go over reviews from some other publications.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

IGN gave the film a 7.9 (good), stating ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a fun go-around with characters we love to spend time with, but the second film is far denser and has a few more pacing and story problems than the first. Still, it’s a very good movie with one of the most emotionally impactful endings of any Marvel Cinematic Universe story yet.’

Vol.2 has garnered an 86% on Rotten Tomato’s with the critics consensus being, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s action-packed plot, dazzling visuals, and irreverent humor add up to a sequel that’s almost as fun — if not quite as thrillingly fresh — as its predecessor.’

The Guardian gave the film 3/5 stars saying, ‘Two episodes in and the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is already starting to feel like an ironic, pop-cultural reference bingo card. And while I’m as much a sucker for ELO’s Mr Blue Sky on a soundtrack as the next guy, I’m beginning to wonder whether chucking in a namecheck for Pac-Man or Knight Rider whenever there’s a lull in the banter is really enough to distinguish this series from the rest of the Marvel mulch.’

So the general consensus seems to be that the film is pretty good, but not great, and definitely not superior to its predecessor. It’s interesting reading into the opinions of others. Where they find fault, I found admirable film making. Where they found yawn inducing jokes, I found laugh out loud comedy. I guess that’s the problem with comedies, and even films in general. You’ll always find those who disagree with you. But hopefully there is someone out there, wondering whether they should watch this film, and have been swayed by my words of praise. If you’re interesting in delving deeper into the Guardians of the Galaxy universe, make sure you check out our review for Telltale’s first foray into the series.

Stan Lee’s appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe likely began as a simple homage to the man that created so many of the Comic Universe’s beloved characters. But over time fans began to think maybe his appearances weren’t simply a coincidence but were a part of the comic lore itself.

Fair warning that there are mild Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 2 spoilers listed below.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Stan Lee appears in a space suit talking to an ancient alien race who watch over planets containing sentient life. That aliens were The Watchers. This begs the question of whether Stan Lee’s character, across all of the films, is Uata, the first watcher.

Marvel

I’ll be honest Stan, I’m not sure if your head is big enough to be The Watcher

In an interview with Screen Rant, Marvel chief Kevin Feige seemed to confirm – or at the very least endorsed – the widely held fan theory regarding Lee.

“Yes, we always thought it would be fun. Stan Lee clearly exists, you know, above and apart from the reality of all the films. So the notion that he could be sitting there on a cosmic pit stop during the jump gate sequence in Guardians was something very fun – James had that idea and we shot that cameo and loved it so much, you know, you see it a couple of times in the movie. It wasn’t in for a long time and we put it back in towards the end of the process where he references that time he was a Federal Express agent – we thought it would be fun to put that in there because that really says, so wait a minute, he’s this same character who’s popped up in all these films.”

While Feige doesn’t outright say that Stan Lee the first watcher it would make the most sense. Not only would it be pleasing continuity wise, it’s also a rather fitting role for the man who has watched his creations come to life over the past few decades.

Though there have been some health issues for Mr. Excelsior, he has already shot cameos for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War. Be sure to keep a watchful eye out for any more news regarding Lee and the Marvel Universe.

A lot can happen in a gap of two years, especially for a teenage, especially for a mutant teenager with the powers of a warhead at her fingertips. After stealing the show as one of the lesser known mutants on the X-Men roster – alongside Colossus – Negasonic Teenage Warhead is set to return for Deadpool 2.

In an interview with Screen Rant at South By Southwest, the actress who played Warhead, Brianna Hildebrand, talked about what she believes different about her character in Deadpool 2.

“I do think she will be a lot cooler, based on the wardrobe ideas and stuff. I’m very excited.”

Even though Hildebrand revealed she hasn’t seen the script yet, she based the statement on the concept art, and the vision for the character she’s had since the first Deadpool’s end. While not even the concept art is concrete she stated that Warhead definitely seems like she’s matured, and no longer epitomizes the essence of a “punk kid.”

It should be interesting to see not only how her dynamic with The Merc with a Mouth changes – as most of their dynamic was based around Deadpool making fun of her attitude and age – but how it affects her powers. If her attitude has matured, it can only be assumed her powers have too, so Wade Wilson better be careful when insulting her this time around, as she might unleash a controlled nuclear blast in his direction.

Deadpool 2

Be careful who you’re calling kid this time around Mr. Wilson

While her exact role has yet to be confirmed, as the casting of Cable will mean a smaller role than her first, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus are indeed confirmed to return for Deadpool 2. We’ll find out for certain when Deadpool 2 is officially released on June 1, 2018.
