Fox has announced that the science fiction favorite, X-Files, will be returning for an eleventh season in the 2017-2018 television season. The newest season of the 90’s hit will air ten episodes with Gillian Anderson and Dave Duchovny returning as agents Dana Skully and Fox Mulder. The original creator, Chris Carter, is also a part of the new series event.
After fourteen years of being off of the air, Fox revived X-Files for a short event last year. The season only ran for six episodes, and it was received with mixed emotions from fans of the original show. However, Fox stated that is has been one of its most successful revival attempts. The season finale of the event left viewers with a bit of a cliffhanger that I’m sure will continue into the eleventh season of the show.
Even though this is the second revival series of the show, Fox is still referring to it as a “series event”. By continuing to give X-files this title, it gives Fox and those involved with the show a little wiggle room. It basically allows them to make as few, or as many, episodes of the show as they’d like without limiting or overestimating themselves. Therefore, if the eleventh season of the sci-fi is as popular as the year’s before, it’s safe to say a third season will be in the works before too long.
Production on the eleventh season is set to start sometime this summer. While Fox did not announce a release date, rumor has it that we can expect the newest episodes of the X-Files to premiere sometime this winter.
In anticipation of the new season, tell us your favorite X-files episodes in the comments below! I’m partial to “The Host” and “Humbug” myself, but there are so many good ones to choose from!
