Ever since it debuted on debuted on Netflix in 2016, Voltron: Legendary Defender has gone from a nostalgic reboot to a fan favorite. Alongside interesting new stories, a lot of that can be credited to the characters and the voices behind them.
One of those is Rhys Darby, who plays Conan, the eccentric advisor of Princess Allura. In a recent interview with Bleeding Cool’s Rich Johnston at SDCC sat down with the voice actor to discuss just how much the character has evolved in the last two years, along with where he sees him going in the future.
I would love to see more of his back story, because it’s so interesting, I mean he’s apparently about 600 years old, unless I’m wrong. He’s gone through so much, and we get little inklings as to what he was like as a youth, and he was sort of into gambling and things like that and you can see him hanging out in some pretty dodgy joints with some weird alien people, and wheeling and dealing, probably a lot of improvised dancing, sort of winning competitions here and there for this and that.
He wants to be kind of a superhero — that moment where he’s got that cape and those crazy glasses and he thinks he’s gonna fly. He’s certainly into fashion, he’s spectacular, but it [exploring his past] never quite gets there.
So, the thing it does get there with is that big massive base of knowledge he has to save the team. So, I’d like for him to get let loose and be in some sort of competition — that might even happen in the new season — where he doesn’t have to use his smarts, and he can use his talents and see where that leads him.
Season 7 for Voltron: Legendary Defender returns to Netflix August 10th, and will consist of 13 episodes. Be sure to catch up on any of the series that you have missed in the meantime, as all of them are available on Netflix.
