Marvel has had an interesting relationship with the concept of characters being married over the years. Letting them be paired off is certainly not off-limits. But a lot of the most significant married duos have fallen by the wayside. The Fantastic Four still isn’t around. Peter Parker and MJ haven’t been married in about a decade. Scott Summers is pretty dead at the moment, so Jean’s without a husband. The list goes on. With all that in mind, it’s nice to see that Marvel is finally planning to ring those wedding bells again, now for longtime X-Men sweethearts, Kitty Pryde and Colossus.
Kitty proposed to Piotr in X-Men Gold #20, following a trip tot he Negative Zone that almost took his life. And that’s an immediate distinction from most other superhero couples. The pair has been through a lot. Kitty’s concern for his life is well-founded. Afterall, she’s been through his death before. What’s more, it’s entirely possible the roles could reverse at some point, and Kitty’s a smart girl. She knows this. One of the things that really helps to inform this decision is the history of the relationship, including all the dying, the breaking up, the rekindling, all of it. It’s been a tumultuous journey, for certain. But that’s to be expected from superhero relationships. Especially when both parties are superheroes.
Kitty and Colossus are a fan-favorite couple. But they aren’t the only ones tying the knot in the near future. Some could argue that this is largely a response to DC. Marvel’s main competitor has been opening the doors for more family-focused stories in recent years, especially with the return of the Superman/Lois Lane marriage, which has led to the addition of their son, the new Superboy. And then there was the proposal that rocked the entire comic book community, last year – Bruce Wayne and Seline Kyle.
But regardless of whether or not it is a reactionary decision, it’s one that makes sense for the characters and is certainly poised to please a lot of fans. The exact date isn’t certain, but Kitty and Piotr will be reading their vows in the pages of X-Men Gold #30, later this year.
