13 Reasons Why has canceled their LA Premiere out of respect for the tragedy of the Texas High School shooting.
At 7:30 AM on the 18 May 2018, Santa Fe High School was a target for another school shooting in America. Ten were killed and thirteen were wounded. Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a student from the school, confessed to the rampage and told investigators he spared students he liked so that they could tell his ‘story’. It is believed he planned to commit suicide with some explosives but backed out at the last moment.
13 Reasons Why decided to cancel the LA Premiere in which stars of the show were going to attend to. Katherine Langford, Dylan Minnette, Kate Walsh, Alisha Boe, Christian Navarro, Brandon Flynn, Miles Heizer, Justin Prentice, and Ross Butler, as well as executive producer Selena Gomez, were planned to attend the Premiere. Netflix released this statement:
“Our hearts are with the victims of the Santa Fe High School shooting, and with all victims of gun violence. In light of today’s tragedy, we are canceling the 13 Reasons Why S2 premiere event tonight.”
Despite canceling the Premiere, Netflix has gone ahead and released the second season of 13 Reasons Why which will feature gun violence. They have put a warning before every episode due to the increase in school shootings in America over the past couple of years. The first season attracted controversy over Hannah’s suicide, as some believed it glorified suicide. Some children in America even copied the thirteen tapes in the movie and committed suicide.
