Throw out what you know about Pokemon, because Detective Pikachu is coming. Nintendo announced the title today and it is set to release on February 3 in Japan.
The game revolves around a talking Pikachu that dons a detective’s cap and works with a young boy to solve mysteries. The trailer promises plenty of intrigues and clever scenarios. Nintendo is calling the game a cinematic adventure. Players will work together with the dapper electric mouse to solve puzzles and catch criminals.
This isn’t the first Pokémon spinoff, but it certainly is one of the strangest. Nintendo put out Pokemon Snap on N64, Pokemon Dash for Nintendo DS, and Hey You, Pikachu! for N64, just to name a few. The company has brought the critter catching series in many different directions, but this may be its darkest.
The game was first announced in 2013, the game was said to star a crime solving Pikachu who would fight against an evil Blue Pikachu; the Moriarty to his Sherlock. Pikachu himself was being created using motion capture. This would give the character more emotional resonance and would create a more compelling story.
The game will release in Japan for 1500 yen (approximately $12)No word yet on whether this bizarre spin-off will make its way west.
