90 Day Fiancé chronicles the lives of couples who have applied for or received the K-1 visa, which is uniquely available to foreign fiances of American citizens, and therefore have a timescale of 90 days to marry each other — hence the title of the series.
The original series premiered on January 12, 2014, and has enjoyed nine successful seasons. The great reception from fans has also led to the creation of a record 18 spin-offs, which include 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After, 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, 90 Day Fiancé: Before The 90 Days, amongst several others.
However, over the last decade, the franchise has introduced fans to several dramatic couples who left indelible impressions on fans. More recently, 90 Day Fiancé fans started a thread on Reddit where they picked some of the craziest couples to appear across the franchise. Below are the top five picks according to the show’s fans.
Nicole Nafziger and Azan
Nicole Nafziger and Azan Tefou are among the most animated couples ever appearing on the show. The two were first introduced to fans in 90 Day Fiancé seasons 4 and 5. They later returned on 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After seasons 2 and 4. Throughout the four seasons, the two never saw eye-to-eye, and it almost seemed that Nicole was forcing the relationship on Azan.
Nicole, a Florida native and mother of one, met Azan on a dating app. The two connected seamlessly as they got to know each other virtually. However, once Nicole traveled to Morocco to meet with Azan, cracks quickly appeared in the relationship — as the duo constantly clashed over their cultural disparities and even the most basic day-to-day behaviors.
Their incompatibility became more pronounced as time passed, and several red flags appeared in their relationship, especially from Azan. One of the biggest red flags in their relationship was when Azan claimed he was only 55% attracted to Nicole, which seemed to bother everyone except Nicole herself.
Additionally, their relationship also featured cheating allegations by both parties. While they managed to keep their on-and-off relationship for five years, Nicole eventually called it quits “for good” in July 2021. Their relationship was undoubtedly one of the craziest in the franchise, and many fans even admitted that their drama got them addicted to the 90 Day Fiancé franchise.
Paul and Karine Staehle
Paul and Karine Staehle are easily the most chaotic couple ever to appear on the 90 Day Fiancé franchise, with their relationship timeline littered with many ups and downs. The couple met online after Paul decided to look for love outside of his native Kentucky following some unpleasant past dating experiences.
Unfortunately, Paul’s luck didn’t change much in his relationship with Brazilian Karine. The two first appeared on season 1 of 90 Day Fiancé: Before The 90 Days and tied the knot in 2017. They later appeared in several 90-Day Fiancé spin-offs and quickly became known for their chaotic relationship, characterized by several break-ups and shocking reconciliations.
During their break-ups, the two regularly made shocking accusations against each other. In contrast, Paul alleged that Karine had conceived their two children for another man, Karine, on her part, accused Paul of domestic violence. The two even got restraining orders against each other, and later, in 2021, a video of Karine hitting Paul in front of their baby leaked — which led to their split later that year.
Shortly after, they lost their children — Pierre and Ethan Staehle — to Child Protective Services, as they were deemed not good parents. However, in a last-ditch effort to get their children back after many failed attempts, Paul and Karine reportedly reconciled earlier this year. The news of their reconciliation has left many of the franchise’s fans stunned, including Reddit fan u/Mykidsaremylife1969 who wrote:
“Those two are BACK TOGETHER!! I couldn’t believe that… talk about toxicity on EVERY level!”
Colt and Larissa
Colt Johnson has been a permanent feature on the 90 Day Fiancé franchise, having aired three failed relationships in the franchise, including two marriages. His unhealthy bond with his overbearing mother, Debbie Johnson, which played a crucial role in the demise of most of his relationships, was also a huge talking point for the show’s viewers.
However, Colt’s messiest relationship was with his now ex-wife Larissa Lima, with whom he first entered the franchise during season 6 of 90 Day Fiancé. Their journey began when they connected on a dating website. Larissa eventually moved to Las Vegas from Brazil with Colt and Debbie.
However, the move proved ill-advised as the duo quickly became one of the most dramatic 90 Day Fiancé couples, with the fiery Brazilian often feuding with Colt and Debbie. Notwithstanding, the two proceeded to tie the knot in 2018. Unsurprisingly, their problems persisted, and in January 2019, the former couple made headlines when police arrested Larissa for domestic battery after a fight with Colt.
A few days after the incident, Colt filed for divorce from Larissa as their relationship had broken down irretrievably. Later that year, their divorce was finalized, and the two celebrated their split by throwing separate divorce parties at a Las Vegas nightclub. Larissa also used the opportunity to introduce the world to her new beau, Eric.
Even after their divorce, the couple kept serving up some drama, as featured on 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After. Many of the show’s viewers agree that they rank amongst the craziest couples ever to appear in the franchise.
Angela and Michael
Angela Deem and Michael Ilesanmi are other couples that have provided several memorable moments for 90 Day Fiancé fans and rightfully earned them a spot on this list. The two first met when the 34-year-old Nigerian man, Michael, slid into the DM of Angela, a 56-year-old Georgia native.
The two quickly hit it off, and on 90 Day Fiancé: Before The 90 Days season 2, the two begin their journey to the altar after Angela flew into Nigeria to meet Michael for the first time. However, their road to happily ever after was anything but smooth, as Angela’s insecurity and trust issues set the stage for some shocking fights between the two. Regardless, the two still tie the knot in 2020.
Angela gave off many red flags throughout their relationship, but she was most guilty of talking down on Michael. She often got physical with him, and in one particular incident, she threw a cake in his face. Angela threatened to end their marriage several times and even began an affair with a retired stripper back in the US.
The two later appeared on 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After, where Angela discovered Michael had a secret girlfriend in America, whom he had met on Instagram. Angela found it too hard to deal with the betrayal and reportedly ended their marriage at the beginning of the year.
Jorge and Anfisa
Jorge Nava and Anfisa Arkhipchenko’s relationship was doomed to fail immediately. The former’s lies about how wealthy he was, set the tone for a disastrous relationship characterized by drama, drugs, and many messy fights. Like most 90 Day Fiancé franchise couples, the duo began their journey online via Facebook. Jorge, a Riverside, California resident, met Anfisa, who hails from Moscow. After convincing her about his enormous wealth, she quickly packed her bags and flew to America with her soon-to-be husband.
Once Anfisa arrived in America, she quickly realized that Jorge had lied about his wealth, and her rage instantly turned on him. Although the two still managed to tie the knot, Anfisa’s controlling behavior and feats of anger made it impossible for them to have a blissful union.
Apart from inscribing the word “idiot” on Jorge’s car, Anfisa also took delight in destroying Jorge’s properties at the slightest provocation. In one particular episode, she broke several of Jorge’s phones, and in another instance, she erased everything on his phone. However, the biggest red flag was her tendency to get physically abusive, which she displayed by slapping Jorge in front of cameras.
Thankfully, their relationship ended when Jorge went to prison for marijuana possession in 2018. Once he exited jail, Jorge moved on to a healthier relationship and has since started a family. Meanwhile, Anfisa is also doing great with her modeling career. So it is safe to say they are one couple that were never meant to be together.
