Picking six unforgettable moments we can’t wait to play in the Resident Evil 4 remake has actually been quite tough. Why, you ask? Because RE4 is essentially a perfect game. The pacing, the story, and the gameplay are so riveting from start to end that we can’t wait to play the whole thing. But most people have one or two moments from this amazing game that stand out as their favorite. We sat down at a Nerd Stash roundtable, and everyone gave their input. Here are six moments we can’t wait to play in the Resident Evil 4 remake.
These are presented in no particular order.
The Village Encounter
Many will argue that the opening section of RE4 is literal perfection. When choosing moments, we cannot wait to experience again; this tops the list. From the sepia-toned mountains to the true sense of unease, imagine what it’ll look and play like now? Then, once the mayhem starts, it doesn’t give you a second to catch your breath.
It also stands in opposition to the normally slow-paced RE games we got up until this point. The village scene lets fans of this series know this would be a different ball game. The sense of helplessness as a whole crazy town descends upon you still freaks us out. But we know with a paint job, this scene will be even more harrowing.
Then true panic sets in as you hear a chainsaw revving…
Dr. Salvador’s Chainsaw Chase
You knew this game wasn’t playing the second you heard the chainsaw. You were already bombarded on all sides with people trying to murder you. Suddenly, from out of nowhere, a freak with a burlap sack over his head appears and tries to Leatherface you. Even though you have weapons at this point, it feels hopeless. He runs at you, chainsaw up.
Many gamers have learned that if you don’t act quickly, off with your head. It is adrenaline-inducing gaming at its finest. And this isn’t even touching on the multiple female versions of him you fight later in an arena. Our thoughts are if you thought it was scary before, wait until we see it in this version.
El Gigante Boss Battle
I will just come out and say this is one of my favorite Resident Evil moments of all time. When you first see El Gigante, it is honestly terrifying. What Resident Evil 4 does so well is it makes the odds feel stacked against you. And nothing takes the wind out of your sails like a 20-foot-tall mutant trying to Hulk-smash you.
Is the fight particularly tough? No, but it is visually astounding, even in its old form. The RE engine has evolved so much visually since then. We are already imagining how the textures of its rotten flesh will look. Also, there are distinct rumors that there may be some changes to the game. So maybe, just maybe, El Gigante won’t be such a (literal) pushover this time around.
The (Panic Inducing) Regenerators
You can’t talk about six unforgettable moments we can’t wait to play in the Resident Evil 4 remake and not mention these freaks. Regenerators are considered one of the scariest video game enemies ever. With the strange wobble they walk with to their toothy grin, Regenerators just fill the player with dread.
And you need to be damn good with that sniper rifle to pick off their parasites. Many gamers died time and time again, unaware that they were invincible until you did that. Pair that with their ability to reach across the screen and one-hit kill you; these are some of the toughest enemies in the game. For that reason alone, we cannot wait to see what they do with them in the RE 4 remake.
The Salvatore Statue Chase
Salvatore was the classic, cheesy RE character we all love to hate. He was also a funny reminder that no matter how much it has changed, this is still a Resident Evil game: Aka, a good-bad B movie. The character in himself can best be described as Napoleon. No, really. A tiny dude who makes up for it with hellfire. His boss fight almost made the list. Fighting a tiny dude inside a Little Shop of Horrors plant is hard to forget.
But it is his later form (an automaton); he is one of the most visually insane moments of any Resident Evil game. In a chase scene, a tall Salvatore statue, the ‘Statue of Liberty,’ chases you out of a burning, collapsing castle. The scene is easy to beat, but there is something over-the-top about it. It’s, in a word, badass.
And that in itself is half the charm of this series. It refuses to take itself too seriously, and the outcome is unforgettable insanity. But we know this scene will be visually jaw-dropping with the modern engine.
The Cheesy (but Awesome) Jet Ski Escape
So how do you properly end a crazy, off-the-wall B movie horror game? With an equally crazy and off-the-wall final segment that feels like it is right out of an 80’s action movie. With everything about to crumble down on top of them, our hero grabs the Prez’s daughter and throws her on the back of a random jet ski. Why is it there? We don’t care, it rules.
Then once she is on board, you just take off in the jet ski as the whole compound is crumbling down on top of you. It’s both bizarre and fantastic, all at once. Say what you want, but it is the perfect action movie moment to end this 20-hour journey with.
The One Thing We Are NOT Looking Forward To
Ashley screaming Leon 30 times every four minutes. Let’s pray they got some good A.I. tweaks to her as well. Luckily you can just toss her in a dumpster and do your thang. If only real relationships were that easy.
