After the horrendous acts committed by Hitler and the Nazi’s in WWII, the word Nazi will always be linked with hate. The Call of Duty series has featured the group throughout many of their games, including the upcoming Call of Duty: WWII,  as enemies, but would they ever let players play as a Nazi in a campaign?
Because of how many of Call of Duties multiplayer games have been set up, sometimes using axis vs allies, there have already been instances of playing as a Nazi soldier. But in an interview with Jagat Review regarding Call of Duty: WWII, Sledgehammer Games Narrative Director Scott Whitney talked about possibly broadening the scope of WWII’s large story in the future.
“WWII is such a big subject that we didn’t feel like we could detail all aspects of it and do them justice, so we had to narrow the focus,” Whitney said. “So this time out we are playing from the allied perspective, but it’s hard to say what the future would be. Maybe we could broaden that out in the future.”
Whitney continued to talk about the nuanced perspective the team took when crafting the narrative of Call of Duty: WWII. Sledgehammer wanted to show that even within the German’s that players will fight in the game, it wasn’t a situation where all of them were Nazi or bad people. Some of them were just good Germans caught up in this larger conflict.
Last year we saw a more realistic version of war in Battlefield 1, showing that war is hell, and that despite fighting the “bad guy,” not every enemy was inherently evil. The Call of Duty: WWII stroy trailer that released earlier this year showed off that perspective as well, while not outright showing off any “good” Nazi or German soldiers.
