A Fold Apart is the new Pixar-inspired puzzle game by Lightning Rod Games.
In A Fold Apart, you play as two characters in a long-distance relationship. The game gives a variety of gender options for couples. Allowing you to be either a same-sex or opposite-sex couple. The goal is to reach your partner at the end of the map. You do this by folding the map to form a walkable platform. Once you reach them, they run away, and you have to go to them again. During Toronto’s EGLX, we got to demo the game and had a chat with Mark Laframboise, one of the game’s lead designers, to find more about the game and its inspirations.
One of the big and more obvious questions we had was why a game about long-distance relationships. What inspired that unique concept?
The game was inspired by the trials and tribulations of my own long-distance relationship.
The art is very cute and eye-catching for A Fold Apart. We had to know what inspired that art style?
A Fold Apart had a lot of influence from Pixar movies.
The game does give out a Disney vibe and the art is one of the most appealing parts of the game. While there, we saw people demoing A Fold Apart and the art style called out for us to play that game.
With this being a game about a long-distance relationship we had to know if any form of co-op will be a part of the game?
The game is intended to be a single-player only experience.
A game about a long-distance relationship does seem more fitting to be played alone. You can experience that sense wanting to reach out to somebody when you’re by yourself.
How long do you expect the game to be?
I want A Fold Apart to be a shorter concise experience. The game will be around 3-4 hours.
How many people at Lightning Rod Games are helping make A Fold Apart?
There are five people on the team. And that game has been a real team effort.
There are these two characters we’re looking at throughout the game and we’re not sure what to call them. Do they have names?
The characters in A Fold Part don’t have names. But we like to call them Teacher and Architect.
We noticed a lot of ladies coming by and checking out A Fold Apart. What is your target demographic for the game?
The demographics are ages 20-25 and very female-heavy. The game’s art seems to really appeal to a female audience.
You can expect A fold Apart to be out on Apple Arcade by December. Mark is also planning to release the game on consoles and PC by Valentine’s Day 2020.
