Along with releasing Halo 3 in The Master Chief Collection for PC, 343 Industries added a brand new item to the game called Acrophobia Skull. This Skull allows you to fly and hover around in any Halo 3 campaign missions. When you enable it through the mission select screen, you can activate Acrophobia Skull by pressing and holding the jump button while airborne. Sounds pretty nifty, right?
Long time fans of Master Chief’s adventure probably already know about Skulls; they are gameplay modifiers and have been a staple of Halo games since Halo 2 back in 2004, but unlike other Skulls that are instantly unlocked the moment you start the game (or by finding them first, if we’re talking about the first Xbox version), there is another specific requirement that you need to do to be able to use Acrophobia Skull in Halo 3 MCC. You have to defeat 343 flying enemies (Sentinels, Drones, Banshees, and Phantoms) in Halo 3 campaign on Normal difficulty or harder from July 14 through July 29, 2020.
You read that right. You only have one more week to get it! But do not fret. First, if you have played through Halo 3 campaigns (and died a couple of times like myself), your progress towards unlocking the Skull should be about halfway done. Thus farming for another 100 kills shouldn’t take too much of your time and luckily we also have a handy guide to help you get your hands on Acrophobia Skull.
(Update: On July 29th, 343 Industries changed the way how to get Acrophobia Skull. Check it out here)
Acrophobia Skull Farming in Halo 3’s Crow’s Nest Level
- Start the “Crow’s Nest” level in Rally Point Charlie on Normal difficulty.
- Run through the level until you’re told to get back into the command center and rearm the bomb.
- Clear the room and grab the Fuel Rod Gun from the Brute Chieftain.
- Again, run along until you see a bunch of Grunts running through the tunnel. Prepare your Fuel Rod Cannon to blast the Drone swarm that passes by.
- Revert to the last checkpoint as soon as you’re finished with them.
This is, without a doubt, the fastest and simplest way you can burn through Acrophobia Skull kill requirements (and what most people refer to in other guides like Steam Community Guides). Since there are 15 Drones, you should be able to get the Skull in around 20 resets.
Acrophobia Skull Farming in The Covenant
- Start the “The Covenant” level in Rally Point Bravo on Normal difficulty.
- Grab the Hornet.
- Destroy the first wave of Banshees (and the AA Wraith if you like).
- Revert to the last checkpoint as soon as you’re finished with them.
Using this trick takes more time since Banshees could take much more beating than weak enemies like Drones and there’s a risk of you getting killed either by a Banshee or AA Wraith if you’re not careful. On the plus side, this segment could also double as Heavy Hitter and Car Alarm PVE challenge farming for that sweet, sweet XP and the season unlockables.
Acrophobia Skull Farming in Halo 3’s The Ark Level
1. First Wave of Sentinels
- Start the “The Ark” level in Rally Point Alpha on Normal difficulty.
- Play through the segment as usual, until you find the locked Sentinel Walls door where Brutes are fighting Sentinels.
- Ignore Covenant enemies and start shooting at the Sentinels.
- Revert to the last checkpoint before Johnson came in with the Pelican.
Honestly speaking, farming for Acrophobia Skull in The Ark is somewhat inefficient, especially this part. When or where you get a checkpoint is finicky, and if the game gives you a checkpoint right after all the Sentinels are gone, you are out of luck and have to restart from the beginning again to get back into this point.
2. Second Wave of Sentinels
- Start the “The Ark” level in Rally Point Bravo on Normal difficulty.
- Play through the segment as usual, until you got back to the now unlocked sentinel walls door.
- Follow Guilty Spark and get inside the door. But when you find the bridge console to let the friendly Scorpions get through, ignore it.
- Look to your back, there should be two Sentinel spawners behind the console. Destroy any Sentinels that comes out.
From my experiment, it seems the Sentinel spawners in the bridge console room will keep spawning Sentinels indefinitely. The worst thing about this trick is that they spawn quite slowly. At the very least, they always drop a Sentinel Beam when killed so you don’t need to worry about ammo if — for some reason — you chose this method to farm kills for the Acrophobia Skull.
While the Acrophobia Skull is also available for Xbox One version of MCC according to the July 14th patch notes, there’s still no word from 343 Industries whether the unlocking requirement will roll around again if you missed it this month or the chance is gone forever. I hope this guide serves you well before 29th hits, but if you have your own quick and dirty method to do it, make sure to let us know in the comments?
