Actor and former NFL player Brad William Henke, known for Dexter and Orange Is the New Black, has died at 56 years old. No cause was given, but his family confirmed the news that he died in his sleep on November 29.
Before his days of becoming an actor, Brad William Henke was a college football player at the University of Arizona. The team captain and student journalist was drafted by the New York Giants in 1989. He played defensive line for Denver Broncos. In his athletic career, he played in Super Bowl XXIV. When an injury was sustained in 1994, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career of coaching that swerved into Hollywood when a casting call came for “big guys” changed his course.

Throughout his career, he was mostly focused on the small screen. In Dexter, he played Tony Tucci in the first season, a survivor of that debut season’s antagonist, the Ice Truck Killer. In the FX series Justified, he was one of the antagonists in the second season as Coover Bennett. In Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, he played the captain of the guards, Desmond “Desi” Piscatella. Other TV roles consisted of Lost, The Stand, Sneaky Pete, and October Road.
During his time as an actor, Brad William Henke had some movie roles, both that had theatrical runs and were exclusive to streaming. His most notable films consisted of the Will Smith-led fantasy film, Bright; M. Night Shyamalan’s Split with Anya Taylor-Joy and James McAvoy; the first Pacific Rim; and the Ashton Kutcher-led Steve Jobs biopic, Jobs. His final credited role was the 2022 comedy Block Party by director Dawn Wilkinson (Kim’s Convenience).
He is survived by his mother, Tammy; wife, Sonja; sister, Annette; stepson, Aaden; stepdaughter, Leasa; and grandchild, Amirah.
