Voice actor Kevin Conroy, the famous voice of Batman in Batman: The Animated Series, has died at the age of 66. Conroy’s death was announced by Diane Pershing, who voiced Poison Ivy in the series. Pershing said in a Facebook post, “Very sad news: our beloved voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, died yesterday. He’s been ill for a while, but he put in a lot of time at the cons, to the joy of all of his fans. He will be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans all over the world… RIP, friend.”
Voice Actor Kevin Conroy Loses Cancer Battle
According to The Wrap, Conroy’s cause of death is confirmed to have been cancer, which he has been battling for only a short time. Conroy’s death comes the same year he penned a coming-out story for DC Pride 2022. Having spent years as a closeted gay man dealing with discrimination and hate, Conroy viewed becoming Batman as a turning point for his life and career. Seeing himself in Bruce Wayne’s character with a double life, Conroy finally stopped keeping his secret. He’s now considered an inspirational figure and one of the most beloved portrayals of Batman of all time.
Kevin Conroy: The Iconic Voice of Batman
Kevin Conroy was born on November 30, 1955. He studied at The Julliard School alongside Christopher Reeve, Frances Conroy, and his roommate Robin Williams. He was passionate about theatre and received much acclaim for playing Hamlet at the 1984 New York Shakespeare Festival. He had many notable TV roles, such as recurring roles in Dynasty, Tour of Duty, and Ohara. He also had successful runs on the soap operas Search for Tomorrow and Another World. He also had guest spots on Cheers, Murphy Brown, Spenser: For Hire, and Matlock.
Conroy first began voicing Batman in 1992 in the animated series. He went on to voice the caped crusader in many other films, including Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman: The Killing Joke, Batman: SubZero, and more. He also voiced the character in several other series and the Arkham video game trilogy. Conroy’s voice work as Batman spanned more than 60 productions.

While Conroy is best known for voicing Batman, he did portray a live-action Bruce Wayne in the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” Arrowverse crossover.
Of all the voice actors Kevin Conroy worked alongside, the one he likely spent the most time with was Mark Hamill, the acclaimed voice of the Joker. Hamill said in a statement, “Kevin was perfection. He was one of my favorite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother. He truly cared for the people around him – his decency shone through everything he did. Every time I saw him or spoke with him, my spirits were elevated.”
