Fans of the beloved Cartoon Network series, Adventure Time, will be happy to hear that a new show is in the works. Announced by Warner Media, the Adventure Time spin-off will focus on fan-favorite characters Fionna and Cake. According to the press release, the former Ice King will also join them in their adventure. They’ll have to be careful however because someone wants to “erase them from existence”. The show is set to release on HBO Max.
Warner Media also gave details on how long the show will be and who’s running it. There will be ten episodes each half an hour long. Adam Muto, showrunner of Adventure Time, will return as showrunner and executive producer for this series.
Who are Fionna and Cake?
Fionna and Cake made their debut in the third season of Adventure Time as the gender-swapped variants of Finn and Jake. They live in a universe with other gender-swapped characters such as Prince Gumball and the Ice Queen. The episode later revealed that they are fictional characters created by the Ice King for his fan-fiction.
The news of an Adventure Time spin-off show doesn’t come as a surprise considering the popularity of the show. It ran from 2010 to 2018 and consisted of 283 episodes. It was also nominated for numerous Primetime Emmy Awards and even won some.
The First Adventure Time Spin-off
It also won’t be the first spin-off based on Adventure Time. Since June 2020, special episodes of the series have been releasing on HBO Max. These are hour-long episodes featuring new and returning characters. The first of these specials were released in June 2020, the second in November of 2020, and the third in May 2020. One more special is set to release in the future.
This new Fionna and Cake show is an exciting new chapter in the Adventure Time story. Although the main show ended in 2018, the fanbase and stories are still going strong.
