Romantic comedy is a popular genre within anime. Some of my favorite animes I’ve watched have fallen into that category. The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, Golden Time, Kotoura-san, were some of the first ones I’ve watched, and I guess you could say that the romantic comedy genre was my introduction into the world of anime and manga. Now, there’s a new show on the horizon. Adapted from a manga, like what seems to be the usual pathway for such intellectual properties these days (sometimes it goes the other way), Aharen-san wa Hakarenai (translated as Aharen is Indecipherable) will be getting an anime adaptation coming to screens in April 2022.
As seen in the trailer below, Aharen Is Indecipherable is an anime/manga from Asato Mizu about two classmates that at first, don’t speak to each other. Reina Aharen is someone who can’t seem to figure out the proper distance when interacting with someone else. Sometimes she’ll be far away, and at other times, she’ll get right up in someone’s face. That oddity attracts the interest of Raidou Matsuboshi, who sits next to her in class. One day, Aharen drops her eraser, and when Matsuboshi picks it up, she judges the pair as best friends.
The series explores the daily lives of these two characters who found themselves in an odd and unique friendship. The upcoming anime adaptation will air in April 2022, and will be produced by Felix Films, who assisted in 2016’s Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions movie, and the recent SSSS.Dynazenon anime. The director, Yatsutaka Yamamoto, worked on Servant x Service and Valkyria Chronicles, while Monaca (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU) and Satoru Kousaki (Beastars) are composing the score.
