As first reported by Polygon, starting August 28th, Amazon Prime members will no longer be able to get 20% off of video game pre-orders.
However, Amazon doesnāt plan on leaving gamers completely out in the cold. In place of the 20% discount, the retailer will offer Amazon Prime members a $10 credit when you pre-order select games. Once, you pre-order one of these select games, you will then have 60 days to use that credit.
CNET first reported on the possibility of Amazon terminating this program last month due to a change in the retailerās terms of service regarding re-released and remastered titles.
Before being limited to just pre-orders, this discount actually covered purchases of any new game as long as you bought it within two weeks of its release. That policy was changed in August 2017.
Amazon isnāt the only major retailer that is ditching a program like this. Best Buyās Gamers Club Unlocked shut down in May of this year. This deal was a subscription service that offered a 20% discount on games.
Only thing I can contribute to the Best Buy GCU reports is that 'GCU is dead', the memo pictured below was sent out today to employees and is real, current GCU members will get benefits until membership expires but cannot be renewed.

Much like Amazon, Best Buy also left gamers with a similar replacement, offering a $10 credit for pre-ordering select games.
What remains to be seen is how gamers respond to this news. Amazon and Best Buyās discounts were an absolute steal for gamers seeing as it was pretty much $12 off their purchase per game. Both companies are offering deals in place of their old 20% discount but it will be interesting to see how it all plays out over the next few months.
