The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman sees another one of his beloved comics adapted for the small screen. This time, his superhero comic Invincible was picked up by Amazon Prime Video as an animated show. The latest casting announcements have seen some big — Oscar and Emmy-winning — talent join the show, including Ezra Miller, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Groff.
Invincible was one of Kirkman’s longest-running comics, published by Image/Skybound. Kirkman worked on the book alongside Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley. Beginning in 2002, it continued for 144 issues before finally concluding in 2018. Invincible proved to be one of the most popular superhero stories outside giants Marvel and DC during its long run. It follows Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), an ordinary kid, but his father, Nolan aka Omni-Man, is a member of the Viltrumite race, making him the most powerful person on the planet. It was and still is a popular comic. There’s no wonder Amazon Prime Video acquired the rights.
We even have an action-packed teaser trailer for the upcoming show:
Before the latest casting news, we already had some exciting voice actors signed on. Voice actors include Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Zachary Quinto, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Mae Whitman, Chris Diamantopoulos, Melise, Kevin Michael Richardson, Grey Griffin, and Max Burkholder.
J.K. Simmons will play Omni-Man in season one. Having previously voiced fan-favorite Tenzin in Avatar spinoff The Legend of Korra, Simmons is no stranger to voice acting, animated shows. So too is Mark Hamill, who is (aside from Star Wars) well known for his portrayal of Joker.
Most recently, Deadline announced several additional voice actors, sending huge talent to the show. Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali will voice Titan, while Clancy Brown will portray Damien Darkblood. Hamilton star Jonathan Groff will play Rick Sheridan. More actors include Nicole Byer as Vanessa & Fiona, Jeffrey Donovan as Machine Head, Jon Hamm as Steve, Djimon Hounsou as Martian Emperor, and Ezra Miller as DA Sinclair.
The cast was crazy good already, but now it has gone to another level of great. Amazon already has a popular superhero show in The Boys. Hopefully, Invincible will help cement their stance as one of the best streaming services for the superhero genre.
Amazon’s Invincible will air eight one-hour episodes in its debut season. It will air sometime in 2021. Will you be watching? Let me know in the comments!
