The highly-anticipated Lord of the Rings series has finally announced its premiere date along with the first look at Middle-earth. Amazon Studios just unveiled a shot from the show’s first episode, which features a character in white facing a grand city (seen above). Eager fans can expect the show to arrive on September 2, 2022, on Prime Video.
The First Look at the New Middle-earth from Amazon Studios
With filming coming to a close for The Lord of the Rings, the cast and crew are ready to sneak in peeks of Middle-earth. Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, shared her enthusiasm with The Hollywood Reporter by saying:
I can’t express enough just how excited we all are to take our global audience on a new and epic journey through Middle-earth! Our talented producers, cast, creative, and production teams have worked tirelessly in New Zealand to bring this untold and awe-inspiring vision to life.”

All that creative work and COVID-19 seems to have paid out well, though. The first look image above presents a wide shot of an unknown character, standing before a city (Lindon?) and setting sun. Amazon has not disclosed who this figure is, but we’re bound to see more down the line as we get closer to September of next year.
The new Lord of the Rings series will focus on the legendary era of the Second Age. In other words, the show will take place thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. While we may not see many familiar faces, there will be some recognizable locations and sights. Our heroes will have to face the inevitable re-emergence of evil that seeks to corrupt Middle-earth. While this may be Sauron, the titular baddy of the series, there is a chance it could something else from J. R. R. Tolkien‘s other works.
