Hacks star Poppy Liu has joined the American Born Chinese cast, as reported by Variety. She will appear as a guest star as Princess Iron Fan in the upcoming Disney Plus series. Her character is described as “enchanting and as possessing magical powers.”
The actress will join the series with its star-studded cast of Michelle Yeoh, Daniel Wu (Into the Badlands), Chin Han (Mortal Kombat), and Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) in the series which is based on a graphic novel. It will follow a teenager, Jin Wang (Ben Wang), who is balancing his life at school and his immigrant home life. His world gets shaken after meeting foreign exchange student Wei-Chen (Jim Liu), who gets him in a battle with mythological gods.
Kelvin Yu acts as showrunner, writer, and executive producer for American Born Chinese. Executive producing with him will be Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, Asher Goldstein, Erin O’Malley, and Yang. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton will executive produce and direct. This project will reunite Cretton with Yeoh, who worked together on Shang-Chi.

Since 2018, Liu has become a rising star on TV. Her first major role was in Mercy Mistress and shortly followed by Sunnyside. She also starred in the iCarly revival. She also appeared in four episodes of Better Call Saul. HBO’s Hacks became her breakout role as the always fun to be with Kiki.
American Born Chinese is not the only major project in the works for the actress. She completed work on the drama Shallow Water with Vincent Martella (Phineas and Ferb), Ciara Renée (The Flash), and Thomas E. Sullivan (Agents of SHIELD). She will also be in the series Dead Ringers, with Rachel Weisz leading the horror-thriller show.
