When you have a reality show that goes on as long as American Idol, you would have countless finalists, judges, and more come through the door. Insider has spoken to some of these contestants for the 20th anniversary of the series about their true thoughts on the decision-makers who pass them forward or toss them off the stage. With judges like Simon Cowell, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, and more, people had various insights on them, along with some people simply gushing over the celebrities they got to meet during their time.
Plenty of American Idol finalists found great support during their run. Season 13 runner-up Jena Irene Asciutto found Harry Connick Jr., who had a short run from season 13 to 15, always “constructive” with his criticism, even if it was a criticism that the contestant did not want to hear. One of the best-known judges in the series was Simon Cowell. He became known for being brutal and blunt with his criticism, but for season 6 finalist Melinda Doolittle, he was her “favorite judge” for how he pushed people forward. While some people found him scary, Crystal Bowersox, a contestant on season 9, “wasn’t afraid” of Cowell. She had “respect” for his blunt style.

Lopez was on five seasons, leading her to interact with plenty of American Idol finalists during her run. For season 11 contestant Jessica Sanchez, she found the musician “drop-dead gorgeous,” “talented,” and she had a “crazy work ethic.” While people were busy giving her the time she needed, she said that Lopez had her back and was “always sweet” on and off camera.
Some people came on for temporary positions. During season 9, Ellen DeGeneres came on board. Bowersox found the temporary judge to be “very kind” and “didn’t want to be rude to anyone.”
