If you’re like me and find absolutely no pleasure in games that purposefully induce spine-tingling pangs of deep-set horror, then there’s some excellent news from Frictional Games, the masterminds behind scare-fest Amnesia: Rebirth.
From today, Amnesia: Rebirth lands a new mode that takes the monsters, darkness, and jump-scares out of the equation. The new adventure mode is far more Indiana Jones than unbridled horror. Instead, the focus is on the facets of Amnesia that frame the fright-inducing gameplay: the captivating narrative, environments, and puzzles.
Some might remember that the developer introduced a similar well-received mode to its previous effort SOMA. With the Amnesia: Rebirth mode, Frictional Games is aiming for very much the same result:
We believe that anyone who loves a good story-driven adventure game will be stoked about this new mode. Not everyone is into horror and we don’t want that to block people from experiencing Tasi’s story.”
Amnesia: Rebirth Without the Anxiety-Inducing Elements
More specifically, Amnesia: Rebirth adventure mode extracts all life-threatening encounters, and unnerving sounds and visuals effects. The mode also brightens up the game with better-lit environments to promote exploration. Additionally, Frictional Games is throwing in new bonus puzzles to further the sense of ‘a true Lovecraftian mystery adventure novel’.
Frictional Games explains:
The game is still the same at its core. Following the story of Tasi Trianon, she finds herself in the desolate landscape of the Algerian desert, battling against her fears and pain as she fights to save the ones closest to her. Amnesia: Rebirth will take you through a wide variety of uncanny environments, from scorched deserts and dark caves to forgotten ruins and alien landscapes.”
Amnesia: Rebirth Adventure Mode is live now on Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. PlayStation players will have to wait a bit longer, with a release planned sometime in the next few weeks.
