2020 was honestly a very interesting year. While it definitely had its downsides thanks to the pandemic, it was also a time for people to connect through other means. Rather than meeting in real life and risking catching COVID, many people gravitated towards online interactions. Whether that be through the video chat platform Zoom or maybe even Discord, there were plenty of creative ways to get together. One such form is gaming, which saw massive rises due to people staying inside. In particular, the murder mystery game Among Us has seen tremendous growth despite being an indie game from several years ago. So much so, that it rose to be the number one trending video game on Google.
Now, this should come as no surprise. Among Us saw an absolute explosion in player numbers, which remains fairly consistent to this day. While it exists on several other platforms, SteamCharts says the game is sitting pretty stable at around 88000 concurrent players on Steam. There are much higher games, but the fact that a game this small that came out two years ago is seeing that high of player numbers is commendable. It’s a shame we didn’t discover the game sooner, as there’s near endless replayability with each group of players making it a different experience.
For those curious, Among Us had some strong contenders in the top 10 for Google Trends. In order, it was followed by Fall Guys, Valorant, Genshin Impact, Ghost of Tsushima, Animal Crossing, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, The Last of Us 2, Madden NFL 21, and Jackbox. All of these games were hot topics for better or worse, so it’s unsurprising to see them following. It’s crazy that an indie game like Among Us beat all of these though.
