For Star Wars fans, there is good and bad news. Good news: Andor season 2 has been confirmed by Collider to begin production this week. Bad news: We will likely not be able to watch it until 2024, as filming wraps next summer. When you account for the months of filming and then everything that goes into post-production due to the heavy use of visual effects, we better strap in for a long wait.
Collider spoke to the creator of the Disney+ series, Tony Gilroy, about the timeline. Like the debut season, Andor season 2 will be 12 episodes. That amount of content to put together will take time. For Gilroy, his guess is based on how things went when creating this first season, which took about three years. If the budget was more, then it could go faster as VFX takes so long, especially with the budget of a big TV show, which is still significantly smaller than a massive movie like Rogue One.
“If past is predicate, and we do the same thing we did before, it’ll be on the same schedule. It will come out two years later,” he said. “The only place you can accelerate the processes is in post, and the only way you can accelerate in post is with money, and money is tight.”
Andor season 2 production means 2024 or beyond return for series
The story arc for Cassian (played by Diego Luna) is four years, taking audiences on his journey to becoming the rebel they were introduced to in Rogue One. The first season was a year with some time jumps sprinkled throughout. The next outing will cover the remaining three years to the point he joins a group who steal the plans to the Death Star.
Andor season 2 will continue the different direction the show has taken compared to other Star Wars movies and shows. Traditionally, no matter who you follow as the protagonist, you see lightsabers, Jedi, and the Force. None of that is seen as the show takes on a grounded approach to the sci-fi franchise. We get more focus on the politics of what happens in the universe with a spy thriller take as people organize to fight against the Empire.
While it might be ways away, you can prepare yourself for Andor season 2 by watching the first season on Disney Plus. This Wednesday will be the finale. The streamer also has its successor, Rogue One.
