Over the decades, audiences have seen many takes on Batman. HBO Max Latin America will now handle its twist with Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios (Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires), which will be an animated Batman film. This will mark the first time Warner Bros Animation, Particular Crowd, Mexico’s Anima, and Chatrone will collaborate on a project.
The story will follow a boy named Yohualli Coatl. After the death of his father and village leader Toltecatzin by Spanish Conquistadors, he goes to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka. While there, he uses the temple of the bat god Tzinacan as his lair to train with his mentor Acatzin. This is where he develops his weapons to become the hero that his people need.
The Batman animated film will star Horacio Garcia Rojas (Narcos: Mexico) as the avenging hero. Juan Meza-León (Harley Quinn) will direct Batman Azteca. He made the announcement of his directing duties on Instagram. “Its finally out! // Por fin salio! Very excited and honored to be part of this,” he wrote.
José C. García de Letona, Aaron D. Berger, Carina Schulze, and Fernando De Fuentes will produce the project. Alejandro Díaz Barriga, an expert in Mesoamerican history and culture will serve as a consultant.
