The new Ant-Man sequel hit theatres just last week. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantomania now has the record for the largest second-weekend drop at the box office for any MCU movie. The film opened with over $100 million but dropped almost 70% to a little over $32 million this weekend. But, of course, the film’s opening was also small for a Marvel movie, which means a significant drop at this weekend’s box office was expected. This is the third film in the Ant-Man franchise.
It should also be noted that the Ant-Man sequel was also plagued with negative reviews. Currently, it has a 48% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience score for the movie is a bit friendlier, with 83% approving of it.
Peyton Reed directed the Ant-Man sequel. The film stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Jonathan Majors. Reportedly, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantomania had a production budget of around $200 million before marketing costs. Its current domestic box office total is a bit over $167 million. As anyone will point out, this is a terrible start for the MCU phase 5.
The Rest Of This Weekend’s Box Office
Cocaine Bear is in second place at this weekend’s box office with a debut of a little over $23 million. For the most part, the film has positive reviews. At number 3 at this weekend’s box office is Jesus Revolution, which brought in over $15.5 million in its opening weekend. At number 4 and 5 are Avatar: The Way of Water and the latest Puss in Boots movie. Just outside of the top 5 are the latest Magic Mike movie at 6 and Knock at the Cabin at 7. Both made just under $2 million.
