The MCU is full to bursting with heroes, as it is. But with many of them on the way out due to contracts ending and such, one might expect that replacements are coming. It’s no secret that Marvel is looking at roughly half (if not more) of the MCU heroes being female after Phase 4. But the exact path to this is uncertain. To date, only one heroine has headlined a Marvel movie, and that would be the Wasp. This does make sense, seeing as Wasp is one of the most important female characters in all of Marvel. She’s the longest standing female member of the Avengers, being one of its founders, and led the team on several occasions. Meanwhile, characters such as Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and Valkyrie have all had major roles in MCU movies. Captain Marvel is on the way, along with a Black Widow solo movie. But who else? What about Cassie Lang?
For the uninitiated, Cassie Lang is Scott Lang’s daughter. Marvel is no stranger to legacy heroes. Scott Lang, himself, is one, having succeeded Hank Pym as Ant-Man. But Scott was, in a way, succeeded by his daughter Cassie, who developed size-changing abilities of her own. She became the teen superhero, Stature, and fought alongside the Young Avengers. This is largely fueled by her adoration of her father, which is a prominent aspect of the Ant-Man movies.
Cassie becomes Stature after her father’s death (he gets better) as a result of Scarlet Witch going insane. She developed the ability to grow and shrink due to exposure to Pym Particles. And the Senior Concept Illustrator at Marvel Studios just revealed a bit of early concept art from the sequel that may have bigger implications than it might at first glance.
In the image, Cassie is with her father in a shrinking suit, having fun in the pool with Luis. At no point in Ant-Man and the Wasp does Cassie actually shrink. Nor is she visibly exposed to anything out of the ordinary, aside from the giant ant they kept as a pet from their last outing. It’s also worth noting that audiences don’t know Cassie’s current fate. Or Luis’s, for that matter. But the rest of Scott Lang’s entourage played victim to “the snap” from Avengers: Infinity War. Ironically, Scott’s the only one unaffected by this. Though he’s still currently out of commission, given where he was when they all vanished. Is it possible Cassie Lang will come into focus in the future? Maybe. Maybe even alongside the Young Avengers. But first fans have to see what Phase 4 has in store for them.
