Brexit Means… Gaming? Not Tonight: Take Back Control Edition has launched on the Nintendo Switch today.
Today is ‘Brexit Day,’ where the United Kingdom leaves the European Union for… reasons. For some, today has been a day of celebration, and for others, our stomachs have been twisting in fear and uncertainty for our future.
Now, our fears can be a reality with Not Tonight: Take Back Control Edition releasing on the Nintendo Switch. This biting satire of modern Britain is developed by PanicBarn and published by No More Robots, who are based in Manchester, England.
Not Tonight takes place in a post-Brexit hellscape Britain where “Brexit talks have collapsed” and an “extreme far-right government has taken power” and rounded up and exiled citizens of European heritage.
“Work hard, stay out of trouble, and we might let you stay in the UK”
Not Tonight is a real-time management game, “fusing a time-pressure RPG with a politically charged story where every decision matters.” You play as Person of European Heritage #112 assigned the role of ‘bouncer.’ Forced out of your previous life, you must:
- Man the doors of pubs, clubs, festivals, and parties, finding work via the BouncR app
- Check IDs, manage guest lists, and stop revelers from becoming unruly
- Upgrade your apartment, bouncer, and equipment to better prepare yourself for the future
- Decide what lengths you’ll go to in order to survive in a Britain on the verge of collapse
It’s up to the player whether to “join the resistance and fight the regime” or “keep your head low and hope that one day this will all be a distant memory.”
The Take Back Control Edition includes the base game and the One Love DLC that continues the story with an extra chapter and includes new locations and gameplay elements. You can get it on the Nintendo Switch store.
The game released on Steam in 2018 with very positive reviews. It’s currently discounted until the 7th of February; you can get 25% off the main game and 36% off the Take Back Control Edition.
Will you join the resistance against the far-right regime? Let us know down in the comments!
