As first reported by Vanity Fair, Ben Affleck is back in the DCEU and will appear in Andy Muschietti’s The Flash. Affleck reportedly received the script last week and agreed to join the movie earlier this week.
Turns out, Andy Muschietti is a big fan of Ben Affleck’s Batman, telling Vanity Fair:
“His Batman has a dichotomy that is very strong, which is his masculinity—because of the way he looks, and the imposing figure that he has, and his jawline —but he’s also very vulnerable. He knows how to deliver from the inside out, that vulnerability. He just needs a story that allows him to bring that contrast, that balance.”
If anything, Muschietti seems quite confident in his ideas for Affleck’s character and his script for The Flash. So, we know Ben Affleck is coming back but, how much of an impact will Affleck’s Batman have on the movie’s narrative?
“He’s a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before. It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”
Finally, the IT director confirmed that Michael Keaton’s Batman from the Tim Burton movies will have a “substantial” part in The Flash. The movie is said to somewhat follow the iconic Flashpoint storyline from the comics that saw Barry Allen travel back in time to save his mother from being murdered. However, with Michael Keaton’s version of Batman involved, it seems that the film will also tackle DC’s multiverse.
The Flash is currently set to hit theaters on June 3rd, 2022.
