No matter what your opinion is regarding the Hong Kong situation, China’s Tencent has proven to be a valuable partner for growing companies; these companies are looking to expand their business or break into China’s strictly regulated market. In fact, Tencent owns Riot Games, holds a controlling share of Grinding Gear Games (Path of Exile), and a portion of Activision-Blizzard, Ubisoft, Epic Games, and Paradox Interactive. Earlier today, Platinum Games, the creators of Bayonetta, Nier: Automata, and Vanquish, announced their partnership with the Chinese multinational conglomerate.
At the 2017 Game Awards, Nintendo revealed a teaser trailer for Bayonetta 3. Since the announcement, very little information has been released regarding Bayonetta 3. Last month, we covered a rumor regarding the potential remasterings of Bayonetta and Vanquish. According to the story, the two titles would be released in February of 2020. Since then, Platinum Games has released an official trailer confirming the rumor. The two remasterings are scheduled to be released on February 18th, 2020. Sadly, the fate of Bayonetta 3, Lost Order, and Babylon’s Fall remains uncertain.
In their official announcement, Platinum Games President & CEO, Kenichi Sato, stated that Platinum Games had received a capital investment from Tencent as a basis for partnership. At the moment, it is uncertain how much Tencent’s capital investment was. However, Platinum Games has stated that it will not affect the independence of the company.
Platinum Games Announcement!
Below is the official press release by Platinum Games,
“We would like to announce we have received a capital investment from Tencent Holdings Limited as a basis for partnership. This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure.
We hope to use this capital to strengthen our foundation as a business and expand from game development into exploring self-publishing. We also hope that this partnership can give us a wider global perspective, while still creating high quality games that stay true to our name.
Thank you as always for your continued support. Please look forward to what we have in store.”
Controversy aside, the decision to partner with Tencent can be rather beneficial for Platinum Games. The capital investment will enable Platinum Games to hire new staff, upgrade equipment, and work on unique IPs. Will this investment guarantee desired sequels or limited exclusivity? Will Bayonetta 3 release on the Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PS4, and PlayStation 5? Only time will tell.
