The Peacock series Bel-Air has been renewed for season three. The streamer announced the third season of the series on Friday according to Deadline. The series is currently in its second season on the streaming service, airing new episodes until April 27. While many fans of the original series were skeptical about changing the original story from a comedy to a drama, the show Bel-Air was the most-watched series premiere on Peacock, and with the second season it has been the streaming service’s most-watched original sophomore series to date. The success Bel-Air has brought to Peacock made the announcement of season three almost inevitable.
‘Bel-Air’ Gets Third Season at Peacock
Bel-Air is a reimagining of the 90’s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which starred a young Will Smith as a street-smart teenager from West Philadelphia who is sent to live with his wealthy uncle and aunt. The show is iconic for making Smith a star, dealing with class struggles and racial tension, and for its memorable theme song. The Peacock series Bel-Air reimagines the show as a drama, but it features the same story and characters, with Jabari Banks taking on the role originally played by Smith.
Given the legacy of the original show, and given the racial tension that is present in the world, it’s no surprise that Bel-Air has been such a success and kept the story relevant. However, the show did have a major hurdle to deal with when the original “fresh prince” and show producer Will Smith harmed the show’s legacy and his career with his behavior at last year’s Academy Awards. However, Bel-Air creator Morgan Cooper has defended Smith, calling him a “tremendous partner” who shouldn’t be judged for a “human moment.”
Along with Banks, Bel-Air stars Cassandra Freeman, Jimmy Akingbola, Olly Sholotan, Coco Jones, Akira Akbar, Simone Joy Jones, Jordan L. Jones, and Adrian Holmes. Jazlyn Martin recently joined the cast as Jackie, who was portrayed by Tyra Banks in the original series.
Time will tell what Bel-Air season three has in store for the characters. Meanwhile, season two is currently streaming on Peacock.
