The latest look at Ubisoft’s upcoming AAA title, Beyond Good and Evil 2, the prequel to the 2003 hit Beyond Good and Evil, dropped earlier today when Ubisoft North America published a video discussing some of the title’s key features. There has been a lot of speculation as to what this latest installment will be like for its many patiently waiting fans. Imagine waiting for The Winds of Winter since 2003; that’s how it feels for fans. Patience.
But with this latest video, fans were given some information about the staff combat and ship maneuvering systems, and what they’ll be like for players as they play through some of Beyond Good and Evil 2’s story. Creative Manager, Jean-Marc Geffroy, talked about how the character was a pirate and how there are “two very important parts of the gameplay, the ship itself and the character itself while he’s moving on his feet, and the fact that he can use his staff, a bit like the first BGE.”
In the video, you’re shown a live actor doing some twirls with a staff, nailing down the mechanics. Geffroy continues by saying “we are working on all the mechanics with locomotion while the character is moving.” Like the first game, the staff will be an integral part of combat experience. And the developers are ensuring that it’s a fluid and realistic system for their players. Then add jetpacks to the mix, and you’ve got some mobility while traversing the terrain on foot.
Senior Creative Director, Michel Ancel, went on to talk about the overall lure of the pirates in Beyond Good and Evil 2. He said that “they [pirates] were very mysterious in Beyond Good and Evil 1, inside caves. They weren’t like… You weren’t able to see them in the world.” He then said the prequel will explore what happened to the pirates, and why they disappeared from the world in the first place.
Another key aspect of this title is the ships’ features and being able to play with friends. Content Director, Julien Chevallier, said that “it’s really hard in multiplayer to follow eachother at that speed [hyperspace], so you lose your friends, and that’s why you have the armada.” According to him, being in an armada will help in these situations when you lose your friends. You’ll be able to track where they are in the world, making it easier to meet up for missions and more.
Jean-Marc Geffroy ended the video by telling the world that they had the details of the game nailed down, now they’re just adding some more elements to help fine tune it. Beyond Good and Evil 2 was announced last year at E3 2017 and doesn’t have a set release date yet.
