Deadline has reported that Billy Bob Thornton will join Kaley Cuoco for Role Play, an upcoming high-concept thriller for Amazon, Picture Company, and Studiocanal. The film will begin production next month in Berlin. Thornton’s role is unknown.
Thomas Vincent (Possession) is set to direct the film. Seth W. Owen (All Nighter) penned the script. Role Play will follow Kaley Cuoco and David Oyelowo (Selma) as a married couple who go through a shake-up in their relationship after discovering secrets about each other’s past.
Financially, Studiocanal is supporting the film. Picture Company made a deal with Amazon Prime Video for the film to be featured on the streaming service. It will be released in the U.S. and some international territories that have not been listed yet. Alex Heineman, Andrew Rona, and Kaley Cuoco are producing Role Play. George Heller came up with the film’s concept and is executive producing the project with Ron Halpern and Shana Eddy.

Before Billy Bob Thornton set his sights on Role Play, he had been nominated for three Academy Awards, one of which he won. He won for writing Sling Blade, for which he was also nominated for acting in a leading role. He was almost nominated for his supporting performance in A Simple Plan. He had an Emmy nomination for his stint in Fargo for a more recent nomination.
The actor recently starred in Amazon’s Goliath. Later in the year, he will be on Netflix for The Gray Man with Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling.
His co-star was in the second season of her HBO Max series, The Flight Attendant. She will be reprising her role as Harley Quinn in the animated series, which will premiere its third season later this year. She will be in The Man from Toronto this summer with Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson.
