The Joker isn’t the only one that is getting a standalone movie – his number one girl Harley Quinn is getting one as well. Margot Robbie will be taking up the role of Harley Quinn for the second time in the movie Birds of Prey. The first time we saw Robbie in this role was in the 2016 film Suicide Squad. It came out to subpar reviews and unhappy fans.
The details behind the plot of Birds of Prey are still broad, but we do know it will focus on Quinn assembling a team that will include Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to battle an unknown Batman supervillain, rumored to be Black Mask.
In an interview with Collider, Robbie said the following:
“I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.
Currently, Margot Robbie is the only one that has been cast in the film, but there have been rumors of multiple actresses trying out for the other main characters. Casting rumors include Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jurnee Smolett-Bell, Margaret Qualley, and Cristin Milioti. None have been cast yet, and there is another rounds of tests coming up, but it has not been confirmed if it is with the same group or not.
Variety reported that Birds of Prey will be hitting theaters on February 7th, 2020. The movie is set to be directed by Cathy Yan, who before this had only directed one indie movie called Dead Pigs. Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson is also working on the project.
