Blizzard Entertainment has begun hiring design staff for an unannounced first-person game. And if the rumors are correct, this is the same game they began building an engine for back in 2016.
With the past few days, a job was posted on Blizzard’s website for a Senior/ Principal Game Designer. The gaming giant is looking for someone who is a ” talented and experienced Senior or Principal Designer with experience in developing weapons, abilities, and gameplay systems in action or first-person shooter games. As a Senior or Principal Designer, you’ll work with numerous departments to shape the core gameplay experience for this unannounced project by defining the abilities, powers, and weapons our players will use.”
Since 2016, rumors –which were also originally started by a job posting– have been circulating about a new game from Blizzard. They were hiring a Lead Software Engineer to build an engine for an action-oriented, first-person game that would be available on multiple platforms. Sources say due to the similarity of the two postings, that it is extremely possible that they are both working on the same game.
Obviously, most of the speculation of what the game actually is revolves around Overwatch. Being Blizzard’s only other first-person title, fans wondered if this would finally be an Overwatch campaign or the sequel to the popular title. However, the posting strictly asks for people passionate about PvP experiences, so a campaign may be out of the question for now (unfortunately).
However, even the rumors of an Overwatch sequel are pretty much squashed. With its game-as-service system and its well-established team– let alone the wild success of the Overwatch League— a sequel is probably not the answer.
