Bohemia Interactive has announced the next major addition to the Arma 3 Creator DLC series, which will ship you off to the Vietnam War. Developed by the Savage Game Design studio, the S.O.G. Prairie Fire DLC is currently scheduled for a Q2 2021 release on Steam, and will be priced at $22.99 USD (€22.99 EUR / £19.99 GBP). You can click over now to the DLCs Steam page to add it to your wishlist.
S.O.G. Prairie Fire takes the immersive and realistic sandbox first-person shooter play you know in Arma 3 and helos it into the militarily historic heart of the 19-year war. The DLC features both single-player and multiplayer scenarios, a gameplay Area of Operations that measures 300 km2 worth of terrain, four historically accurate factions, and of course, many of the realistic weapons, equipment, and vehicles from that era of warfare.
The DLCs title comes from the pages of actual Vietnam War military history, and refers to “Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group” (MACV-SOG)”. You’ll play as a member of elite MACV-SOG reconnaissance team “Columbia” in the year 1968, tasked with conducting covert missions along the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail. Specifically, your team’s mission is to disrupt and prevent the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) 559th Transportation Group’s flow of supplies along the trail, denying enemy forces the beans and bullets they need to fight while keeping your team alive and operational deep within enemy territory.
Savage Game Design devs developed S.O.G. Prairie Fire in close collaboration “with US Special Forces veterans who served in MACV-SOG until it was deactivated in 1972, as well as Vietnamese advisors”, according to the announcement. This partnership helped the devs instill a high level of accurate military history into the DLC that goes beyond the usual and expected weapons and gear. For example, the jungle sound effects are deeply immersive, including everything from the sounds of jungle warfare to “wildlife calls, disturbed vegetation, quiet whispers of “Charlie”, bullet cracks, explosions, and the loud cries of the wounded.” And of course, no Vietnam War-based material would be complete without authentic period music, which is included here in “an atmospheric soundtrack that consists of rock and blues, and a cinematic score composed with Vietnamese instruments.”
