The nostalgia is overwhelming! On November 21, the Japanese band Ikimono-gakari announced that they will be performing the new opening theme for the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime (translated via Anime News Network). Long-time Naruto fans will remember Ikimono-gakari for their hit Naruto Shippuden opening theme, “Blue Bird”. They’ve also performed openings for other popular shows such as Seven Deadly Sins and Bleach.
After a few timeslot changes, the Boruto anime now airs on Sundays at 5:30 pm. Ikimono-gakari’s new theme will debut in January 2021.
Boruto Anime: Previous Returning Bands
KANA-BOON, the band responsible for the universal ninja anthem “Silhouette”, returned to the Naruto series with the first opening of the Boruto anime in 2017. Their song “Starmaker” was also the opening for the second half of My Hero Academia’s fourth season. Of course, if you’re a Naruto fan on any level, you will know about FLOW’s hit opening themes in “Go!!!” from the original series and “SIGN” in Shippuden.
Personally, one Japanese artist that I would love to hear a Boruto anime opening from is the uber-talented and popular Kenshi Yonezu. He performed “Peace Sign” for My Hero Academia Season 2 and the beautiful “Lemon” for the Japanese drama Unnatural.
Earlier this month, the Boruto manga made headlines after it was announced that Masashi Kishimoto (the creator of Naruto) will be taking over as story writer. The original writer of Boruto, Ukyou Kodachi, announced on Twitter that he will be retiring from the series and that the “planned” staffing change will take place from chapter 52. This chapter will be published on Shueisha’s V Jump magazine.
I can’t wait for Ikimono-gakari’s new Boruto banger! What are some of your favorite anime openings of all time? Which Japanese bands/artists are you into? Share your thoughts with me in the comments below!
