Superhero films and shows have faced bigotry when diversifying casts. As Marvel moves forward with more women, people of color, and the LGBT community to represent more of its fan base, some have taken to online harassment and review bombs to retaliate. Director Nia DaCosta (Candyman) and the cast of The Marvels gathered for a picture, with Brie Larson writing a caption for those trolls on her Instagram, saying, “trolls combust.”
Of the entire cast of The Marvels, Brie Larson is too familiar with trolls. Captain Marvel was the studio’s first woman-led film, and it received review bombs on Rotten Tomatoes. It got so bad that the review aggregator changed it for audiences to only rate a film when it releases, although it does not stop review bombings like recently seen for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
Brie Larson pokes trolls with The Marvels cast and director picture
Formerly titled Captain Marvel 2 and now titled The Marvels, Brie Larson will be united with WandaVision star Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani from Ms. Marvel as Kamala Khan. Samuel L. Jackson will also reprise his role as Nick Fury, who we will also see in his Disney Plus series Secret Invasion.
A trailer was shown at D23 of The Marvels as Brie Larson joins her co-stars for a galactic adventure. Not much is known about the film, but as they use their powers, they will trade places. This answers the bizarre entrance of Captain Marvel in the after-credit scene of Ms. Marvel, where she teleports into Kamala’s room as we lose track of the teenage superhero.
Originally, we were supposed to see Brie Larson back in her suit in The Marvels this year. Every Marvel film got delayed as it went from its November date to February, where it swapped with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania for a July 28, 2023 release.
