The recently released Detective Comics #1064 explores an aspect of Batman not often touched on; Bruce Wayne’s mental health. The issue, from writer Ram V and illustrator Rafael Albuquerque, sees Batman’s showing a concern for his physical health. However, when the doctor suggests the problems are more mental than physical, the Gotham Knight is not too happy!
What is Going On With The Dark Knight?
Before Bruce Wayne’s mental health came into question, the caped crusader has been struggling in his vigilantism. As CBR points out, issues #1062 and #1063 of Detective Comics sees Batman failing to take down a group of thugs. This causes him to begin questioning himself and his abilities.
To make matters worse, Batman is soon haunted by an eerie music box melody. Plus, he begins to have nightmares of Barbatos, a vicious bat demon. Grant Morrison developed Barbatos during his time on Batman in the late 2000’s. It is a cosmic entity whose sole purpose is to destroy worlds. For now, it is unclear if this is the same Barbatos or something more as Gotham becomes embroiled in supernatural forces.
Speaking of, also introduced in issue #1064 are the Orghams. This is an ancient family that controls demons known as Azmers. While Talia al Ghul holds the answers on how to defeat these demons, she is in no mood to share just yet. Instead, she offers the caped crusader some ominous clues and riddles.
What Does This Do To Bruce Wayne’s Mental Health
Naturally, all of this takes a toll on Batman and his alter ego Bruce Wayne. After a string of failures and misfortune, Bruce decides to visit a doctor to get a handle on his injuries. At Gotham City General Hospital, a doctor notes all the physical injuries that Bruce Wayne has amassed. This includes at least two dozen serious bone fractures. However, the good doc notices that Bruce is in great physical shape. Instead, his issues may be coming from panic attacks.
Of course, Bruce thinks that doctor is wrong and almost immediately flees the hospital. Throughout the issue he remarks how ridiculous such a diagnosis is. However, in the grand scheme of things, it makes sense. After all, Batman is in great shape, but all that fighting and almost dying can’t be good for Bruce Wayne’s mental health.
