Hilary Duff shared the canceled Lizzie McGuire reboot plot in a recent interview with Cosmopolitan. Duff is currently starring in another reboot, Hulu’s How I Met Your Father.
According to Digital Spy, Duff told Cosmopolitan that the Lizzie McGuire reboot would feature the iconic character “moving back home with her parents because she caught her soon-to-be fiancé cheating on her, and she was falling flat on her face at the moment and being like, ‘I need to pivot because everything that I thought was wasn’t, and I’m turning 30. What the f**k?'”
The Lizzie McGuire reboot for Disney+ was announced at the D23 Expo in August 2019, and the cast and crew started filming in New York City in November 2019. However, production halted months later, possibly due in part to the Covid-19 pandemic. Clashing over creative differences soon led series creator Terri Minsky to leave the production. Sources close to the show claimed that Disney+ felt the show’s content was too mature and racy, and they wanted a show that appealed to the family as the original series did.
Duff confirmed these claims, claiming it would be a “disservice” to place a 30-year-old woman’s journey under the rule of a PG rating. Despite Duff’s attempts to move the show to Hulu, the Lizzie McGuire reboot was officially scrapped in December 2020. The following April, Duff announced she was cast in a reboot of the legendary series How I Met Your Mother. Interestingly, the reboot airs on Hulu; the same network Hilary Duff eagerly wanted for the Lizzie McGuire reboot.
