The current run of Marvel’s Captain Marvel is coming to an end this summer. After five years in the hands of writer Kelly Thompson, June’s Captain Marvel #50 will bring this chapter of Carol Danvers’ life to a close. The issue will be double-sized and features art from Javier Pina and David Lopez.
The End of an Era for Captain Marvel
Kelly Thompson’s run on the series is sure to go down in history as one of the longest. Over 50 issues, Captain Marvel has featured some incredible story arcs and served as must-read tie-ins to some of Marvel’s biggest events. From the extraordinary “Re-Entry” arc to Carol’s darker turn in “The Last Avenger,” Thompson has maneuvered the hero through some of the best and worst times. However, it isn’t over just yet, as the epic farewell promises to be a must-see for fans of the hero.
Speaking to Marvel, Thompson shared that when she was first asked to helm Captain Marvel in 2018, she was both “delighted and terrified.” After all, this was right before the release of the Brie Larson-led Captain Marvel film. Thankfully, the delight overtook the fear, and it turned out to be a “fantastic experience” for the writer.
Thompson continued to share her experiences on the series, acknowledging that it gave her the opportunity to work with “the most incredible people in the business.” While the journey has not always been easy, Thompson is “proud of the stories we’ve told with Carol.” However, that would not be at all possible without the amazing Captain Marvel fans. Or, as the writer calls them, “the best comic fans.”
A Peak at What To Expect
Unfortunately, the story in Captain Marvel #50 is being kept under wraps for the moment. However, Marvel has revealed the cover. From artist Carmen Carnero, the cover showcases some of the standout moments from the past 50 issues of the series. While there is not a lot of detail, it is sure to be as epic as the entire series has been!
