Disney’s upcoming Mulan live-action remake will not only be accompanied by huge fanfare, but also a fantastic new soundtrack.
Pop singer Christina Aguilera, who is famous for such hits as ‘Beautiful,’ has recently announced that she has recorded new music for the Disney epic.
Speaking to her audience last Wednesday at Las Vegas, the 39-year-old singer explained that she’d recorded a new take on the classic Mulan ballad, ‘Reflection.’ And, if that weren’t enough, she claims to have been working on “new material” for the live-action film.
After announcing this news, the singer then went on to sing the original version of ‘Reflection’ from the 1998 animated version.
The original version of the song was also sung by Aguilera, at the young age of seventeen. The single, which managed to reach 18 on the Billboard US Adult Contemporary charts, put Aguilera on the map as well as being an iconic part of Mulan.
The announcement of Reflection contradicts director Niki Caro’s claim that no music from the original will be featured in the live-action version. Caro claimed this was in order to keep consistent with the new movie’s realistic tone. Producer Jason Reed would later claim that the songs will be used “in a slightly different way” in the remake.
The Mulan live-action film is due for release on March 27, 2020, in the United States. The movie stars Liu Yifie, Donnie Yen and Jet Li, among others.
Yifie, who plays the eponymous character, didn’t show up at 2019’s D23 expo due to the controversy caused over her political views surrounding the Hong Kong protests. Writing, “I support Hong Kong police. You can beat me now. What a shame for Hong Kong” on social media, the Mulan star was accused of supporting police brutality.
Regardless, given this is a Disney live-action remake, it wouldn’t be out of the question to expect a hit on our hands.
