Chucky is Back and Ready to Play
The Chucky franchise holds a special place in my heart. The initial movie, Child’s Play, takes place in Chicago and I was living in Chicago so I was mortified knowing that I lived in the same city that this movie takes place in. Mind you, I was 5 when I saw it, so I was bound to believe anything. And now, 33 years later SYFY is reporting that Alex Vincent will reprise his role from the original Child’s Play movie for their new Chucky TV show. They are also bringing back Christine Elise McCarthy, who played Andy’s foster sister, Kyle, in later installments of the franchise. With her first role coming in the sequel, Child’s Play 2.
Not only are Andy and Kyle returning, but the voice, Brad Dourif, and the mind, franchise creator Don Mancini are also ready to play. I know what you’re thinking, “What about Jennifer Tilly?” Well, she’s back too! Brad Dourif’s daughter, Fiona Dourif, is also on board although they aren’t’ clear what her role for the show will be. I remember her from Cult of Chucky where she played the lead; with her character, Nica Pierce, being Chucky’s main point of aggression. By the end of Cult of Chucky she, in essence, takes the overalls from her father. Which I had not realized up until writing this article. Nice. Alex Vincent also reprised his role as Andy in Cult of Chucky: a different take on the Chuckster. Worth a watch.
What This Means to Me
Whenever I hear talks like this about reimagining, remaking, revamping, or whatever re you wanna use, I always ask one question; Is anyone from the original team and/or the creator of the IP part of it? If the answer is yes, then it should be in good hands. Mad Max: Fury Road comes to mind, that is definitely a remake, but I felt that George Miller got a chance to actually make the movie he might have wanted to make initially back in 1979. The best part about remakes with the original people involved is that they usually have more money to play with. Which just means amazing content for the rest of us.
