Today Universal treated fans to a new photo from the highly anticipated Christopher Nolan film Oppenheimer, his summer 2023 biopic about the scientist who created the atomic bomb. Today’s Oppenheimer photo was the official first look at the upcoming thriller that Universal describes as “an epic thriller .” The Instagram post is a haunting portrait of lead actor Cillian Murphy donning a top hat and a lit cigarette in the full portrayal of the titular character J. Robert Oppenheimer. There is a lot of hype around the top billing cast of Oppenheimer, reminiscent of the buzz around Nolan’s Academy Award-winning sci-fi Inception.
Oppenheimer reunites Cillian Murphy and Christopher Nolan for the 5th time; the two have famously collaborated on the Dark Knight trilogy where Murphy starred as Dr. Jonathan Crane, known throughout the DC Universe as Scarecrow. The last time the duo worked together was on another period piece, 2017’s World War II drama Dunkirk. Since then, Murphy has found success on the small screen, starring as Thomas Shelby in the British crime drama Peaky Blinders.
Oppenheimer is the 11th feature film Nolan has written and directed. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Universal is describing the film as “an epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.” One thing’s for sure, the A-list cast features an ensemble of cinema criminal masterminds with actors Rami Malek (No Time To Die), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), and Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-man 2) all joining Cillian Murphy in the film. Oppenheimer stars Emily Blunt, Josh Hartnett, Jack Quaid, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh. The film is set to release in theaters on July 21, 2023.
