PC parts and peripherals maker Corsair has begun the process of buying high-end controller maker SCUF Gaming. Earlier today, December 16, Corsair announced that they had agreed to acquire SCUF Gaming. SCUF will be added to previous acquisitions Elgato, makers of game capture devices, and Origin Computers who build custom high-performance gaming PCs. The planned sale is expected to wrap up by the end of the year.
Before the Xbox Elite controller, there were SCUF Gaming controllers. Since 2011, SCUF has been an industry leader in custom, high-end controllers. If you’ve ever tried to win a second-party controller in a raffle, it was probably a SCUF. They were one of the first companies to add paddle-style buttons to the bottom face of the controller. The company claims that their controllers provide a competitive advantage, and they are popular in console esports like Madden.
SCUF controllers are also known for being highly customizable, a feature that has made them popular with the growing gaming accessibility movement. SCUF controllers are modular, components like the thumbsticks, trigger, trigger stops and extenders, D-pads, and interchangeable magnetic faceplate, can all be swapped out for various custom versions of themselves. Also, SCUF controllers include a remapping switch, allowing players to change their button configuration without using in-game or system-level tools.
Corsair, on the other hand, is a much older PC parts brand. Since its founding in 1994, Corsair has become one of the best-known names in the PC builder’s marketplace. With a history that long there have, of course, been highs and lows, but the company has a reputation for reliability that makes them a popular choice for PC parts that you want to last, like power supplies.
According to the announcement, SCUF Gaming will remain a separate brand within CORSAIR and will continue to operate from its HQ in Atlanta, as well as regional offices. All existing SCUF Gaming warranties, purchases, and support are unaffected and will continue to be provided by SCUF Gaming.
I wonder if they’ll start bundling RAM with the controllers? Let us know in the comments if you are a fan of SCUF Gaming.
